Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which continent's dialing code is 1?

Answer: North America

The dialing code for North America is +1, in accordance with the North American Numbering Plan. For example, if you wanted to call Saint Lucia, you'd dial the extension for your country to get long-distance calling, then 1 to get to North America, then 758 to get to Saint Lucia, and, finally, the phone number for the specific person you are calling.

The dialing code for Antarctica, interestingly enough, is based on the country which runs the research station that you're calling to. If you were to call McMurdo Station which is run by the US, then your country code would be +1, however, the adjacent Scott Base which is run by New Zealand has the country code of +64.
2. Irish band U2's song "One" was inspired by which of the following historical events?

Answer: German Reunification

The song "One" was released as a single in 1992 and was featured on the album "Achtung Baby", arguably one of U2's best albums. It was written at a time when the band was considering breaking up and going their own ways, and was conceived when they were jamming in their studio one day. Bono claims that "the melody, the structure - the whole thing was done in fifteen minutes".

The lyrics of the song were inspired by German reunification and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall. The band was recording in Germany to commemorate this event.

Interestingly, U2's producer, Brian Eno, initially disliked the song and wanted it reworked. History has shown that it's one of U2's more iconic songs, and, where I come from, it was chosen as the song of the decade for the 1990s. It went on to achieve much critical success, and it has been covered many times, notably, by Mary J. Blige who rereleased the song as a single on her 2005 album "The Breakthrough".
3. The US Armed Forces have used the M1 designation extensively. Which of the following was not an "M1" in the 20th century?

Answer: Submarine

The M1 designation has been used many times by the US Armed Forces, including, but not limited to: The M1 Abrams battle tank, the M1 helmet, the M1 Garand semiautomatic rifle, the M1 flamethrower, the M1 120mm antiaircraft gun, the M1 mortar, the M1 Thompson carbine and submachine gun, the M1 chemical mine, and several other uses.

The British Navy had a submarine called the HMS M1 which was commissioned during World War I. It survived the war but was sunk with all hands after a collision with a Swedish ship, the SS Vidar.
4. In the television series "Star Trek: The Next Generation", Captain Jean-Luc Picard often addresses his first officer as 'Number One'. Which American actor plays Commander William T. Riker?

Answer: Jonathan Frakes

Jonathan Frakes is an American actor who played Commander Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well as the films which included the "TNG" cast. He also tried his hand at directing, starting with "Star Trek" movies and moving on from there.

Interestingly, all of the incorrect answers are all actors who have played first officers on other series of the "Star Trek" universe. Leonard Nimoy player Spock on the original series, Robert Beltran played Chakotay on "Voyager" and Nana Visitor played Kira Nerys on "Deep Space Nine".
5. "1" is a compilation album released in 2000 containing #1 hits such as "Something", "Lady Madonna", "From Me to You" and "Hello, Goodbye". Which band released this album?

Answer: The Beatles

"1" was released on the thirtieth anniversary of the breakup of the Beatles. It is a compilation of all of their hits that reached #1 on the US and UK charts ("Billboard" and "Record Retailer" respectively). It instantly became a huge success and was the top-selling album of the 2000-9 decade. There are 27 hits that made the album, the only notable exception being "For You Blue" which was considered by the label to be a B-Side and therefore ineligible to be a #1 hit despite the credit on "Billboard".

It is interesting to note that the Beatles were only a hit group for about seven years (1963-1970), and, in that short time, managed to revolutionize the world of rock and roll. The band parted ways in 1970 with John Lennon being the first to declare that he was leaving the group.
6. "Number One" was a 1969 film about an aging football quarterback who wants to lead his team to one last title in the hopes of ending his career on a high and saving his marriage. Who stars in the lead role as "Cat" Catlan?

Answer: Charlton Heston

The film, "Number One", featured Charlton Heston as Cat Catlan, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints. He had already led the Saints to a title, and, in the waning years of his career, wants to get another title in order to restore some semblance of normalcy to his life. His wife leaves him after confronting him with his extramarital affairs and drinking problem, and his skills aren't what they used to be.

In the final scene of the movie, Charlton Heston's character gets sacked (tackled behind the line of scrimmage) by the opposing team. In the first filming of the scene, Heston thought that the hit on him wasn't realistic enough. Shooting the scene again, the actors involved, actual NFL players, were told to hit Heston as they would have done in a game. Heston was tackled, and broke three ribs in the process. Think he should have stayed with the original shot?
7. Highway AH1 is an international road that runs between Japan and Bulgaria.

Answer: True

AH1 runs over 20 megameters (20,000 kilometers) from Tokyo, Japan and all the way to the Bulgarian-Turkish border just west of Istanbul. Its route traverses through both the Koreas, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar (Burma), India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey before connecting to the E80 which passes through most of southern Europe.

To get from Japan to South Korea, the AH1 uses a ferry to cross the Korea Strait though plans have been in place since the turn of the 20th century to build an underwater tunnel. The 2008 cost estimate for a tunnel of these proportions, around 128 kilometers, would have been just under 90 billion US dollars. No small change.
8. People who suffer from type 1 diabetes lack which of the following hormones?

Answer: Insulin

Properly known as diabetes mellitus type 1, people who suffer from this disease have their insulin-creating cells attacked by their own bodies (similar to MS, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease or even regular allergies). They lack sufficient amounts of insulin from their pancreas and, thus, do not absorb enough glucose, or sugar, from their bloodstream and into their body to be stored for use as energy.

The symptoms of this disease is totally treatable by injecting insulin when needed, however, no cure has been discovered to entirely recover from the ailment. Some famous people who have or had type 1 diabetes include author Anne Rice, actress Halle Berry, singer Elvis Presley, Olympic gold-medalist swimmer Gary Hall Jr., inventor Thomas Edison, NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, and trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie.
9. Who or what is a "one arm bandit"?

Answer: Slot machine

Before the invention of the electric slot machines where all you have to do to play is press a button, slot machines had a lever arm on one side. After feeding your coins into the machine, you have to mechanically pull the arm in order to get the wheels rotating.

While there was more active participation in this form of gambling, the odds have not changed and remain strongly against the player - hence the moniker 'bandit', as the machine will rob you of your money.
10. The number 1 jersey on the Brooklyn Dodgers of baseball was worn by Pee Wee Reese, the shortstop, during his years on the team from 1940 to 1958. He was a teammate and supporter of which at-the-time controversial player?

Answer: Jackie Robinson

Pee Wee Reese played his entire career with the Dodgers, and was part of the team when they moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, Reese's last season. Pee Wee Reese missed three years out of his career due to World War II, serving in the US Navy in the Pacific theatre. He was also a teammate of Jackie Robinson, controversial at the time because he was the first black player to play in the Major Leagues.

Pee Wee Reese claimed that his first interaction with a member of the black minority had been with Robinson, but that hadn't caused him to be a racist. As a teammate of Robinson, he supported him through his first season when it was still seen as shocking to have a black player in Major League Baseball, and is known for having famously thrown his arm over the shoulders of Jackie in practice before a game against the Cincinnati Reds. This gesture of solidarity and tolerance was immortalized in 2005 in a bronze statue that stands at a Brooklyn ballpark.

Pee Wee Reese had his jersey number, #1, retired by the Dodgers in 1984. Jackie Robinson had his jersey, #42, retired in 1997, by the entire league.
