Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "One for the road" is usually said in what context?

Answer: One last drink before you leave somewhere

There have been various false stories about the origins of the phrase "one for the road", including one that says it refers to a drink offered to a condemned man on his way to the gallows and public execution. In fact, the phrase does not come into common usage until the mid-20th century. Johnny Mercer used it in 1943 in his song "One for My Baby (And One More for the Road)".

This song became associated with Frank Sinatra, and the phrase passed into popular parlance when referring to one last drink before heading home.
2. Which song contains the lyric "One for the money, two for the show"?

Answer: Blue Suede Shoes

"Blue Suede Shoes" was written by Carl Perkins in 1955. He recorded it on the legendary Sun label, and it became a million seller. Numerous cover versions were made, and over the years the song has become more associated with Elvis Presley. Presley, however, released it originally as an LP track on his debut album for RCA, and as a track on an EP taken from the album, not as a single.
3. Neo is "The One" in which series of films?

Answer: The Matrix

"The Matrix" trilogy is a man against machines story in which Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, is the legendary one who can defeat the machines and free mankind from their dominance. The first film, "The Matrix", was released in 1999. "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" were filmed in one go and released in two parts in 2003.
4. Which country has had a one-child policy in force for approximately 36% of its population?

Answer: China

China had a one-child per urban couple limit in force from 1978 to 2015. It did not apply if the couple belonged to an ethnic minority or if they were only children themselves. Neither did it apply in rural areas where couples could have a second child, but they were expected to wait a few years before doing this.

The policy did not apply to any foreign nationals living in China. Its introduction was designed to ensure that China could feed all of its population, which has been predicted to rise to around 1.6 billion by 2050.
5. If you have had "one over the eight", what are you?

Answer: Drunk

This originated as UK military slang, and first appears in the 1920s. It refers to the final drink that makes you drunk. It first applied to just beer, presumably meaning that most military personnel of the time could drink eight glasses of beer without being completely drunk. It now applies to any drink that pushes you over the line between slightly intoxicated and out-and-out drunk.
6. The film "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is based on a book by which author?

Answer: Ken Kesey

Written in 1962, the book was made into a film in 1975. With Jack Nicholson starring as the rebel patient R.P. McMurphy, and Louise Fletcher as his enemy, Nurse Ratched, the film won much critical acclaim. It was nominated for nine Oscars and won five - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
7. A location where all your requirements can be met in one place is often referred to as a what?

Answer: One stop shop

This term originated in the USA in the late 1920s/early 1930s. According to "The Phrase Finder", the earliest advert to use this phrase was a car repairer in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose strapline read "Have it all done in one place. Save your time. Save your money". It now means any supplier of goods or services who fulfills all its customers' needs in one place.
8. What do we call someone who has a hit record, but then proves unable to repeat this success?

Answer: One hit wonder

Whilst the term is directed mainly at musicians who have only one successful record, it can be applied to anyone who succeeds once and only once in any field. An example would be Harper Lee, who wrote only one book. The phrase can also be used in a sporting sense. A boxer described as a "one hit wonder" would be one who relied on one big knockout punch to win a match.
9. BBC Radio One started broadcasting in which year?

Answer: 1967

The popularity of pirate radio ships in the 1960s, such as Radio Caroline, led to the birth of BBC Radio One, which was firmly aimed at the youth market. Although these pirate stations had been outlawed by an Act of Parliament, they were based in international waters and could not be silenced.

They were listened to by thousands. In the end, the only way to combat them was to set up a national radio station playing the same popular music. The first DJ on Radio One was Tony Blackburn, who had been on Radio Caroline, one of the pirate stations.

The first record played was "Flowers in the Rain" by The Move.
10. The song "One Alone" comes from which musical?

Answer: The Desert Song

Written by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein, "The Desert Song" was inspired by the uprising of the Moroccans against French rule. The lead character is a "Zorro" type, mild mannered citizen by day, freedom fighter at night. It was filmed in 1929 with John Boles and Myrna Loy starring, but by the 1940s this version had become illegal in America due to sexual innuendo and open discussion of homosexuality.

A more sanitised version was released in 1953, starring Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson.
