Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Your new acquaintance informs you that she is an "ironmonger". Where is she most likely to work?

Answer: Hardware store

"Ironmonger" is a term for a person selling hardware. Its derivation is British. The term may also refer to a designer of computer hardware. In the computer setting, synonyms would include "sandbender" and "polygon pusher".
2. During World War II copper was in short supply. From what were United States pennies made in 1943?

Answer: Steel

It is estimated that using steel for the 1943 pennies saved 10,000,000 pounds of copper. The pennies are neither rare nor particularly valuable.
3. In Act III of Shakespeare's "Love's Labour's Lost", Adriano and Moth are discussing a particular metal. Adriano claims the metal is heavy, dull and slow; yet Moth ultimately convinces Adriano that this "metal" can be swift. Which metal is under discussion?

Answer: Lead

Moth promises to be "swift as lead" in delivering a message. When Adriano protests that lead is slow, Moth responds, "Is that lead slow which is fired from a gun?"
4. Some would credit Dave Davies with playing the first heavy metal guitar solo on the early 60's song, "You've Really Got Me Now". Which band produced this song?

Answer: The Kinks

Personally, I think according heavy metal status to "You've Really Got Me Now" is a bit of a stretch. In my opinion, The Kinks' repertoire was more creative and diverse than that of any of the early British Invasion bands.
5. Coming to earth as a minion of Galactus, "eater of planets", this Marvel Comics character became a surfing superhero. His name is ___________ Surfer.

Answer: Silver

A "Silver Surfer" #1 comic in mint condition will fetch more than $500. Unfortunately, my collection begins with issue #2 and has lived too many years in garages. The Silver Surfer originally appeared in the "Fantastic Four" in 1966. Do you know the issue number? It's a question that just might appear in a future quiz.
6. If you are a "goldbricker", what are you likely to be doing?

Answer: As little as possible

Apparently, bricks painted gold were successfully sold to gullible buyers as genuine "gold bricks" in the 1800's. This led to "goldbrick" becoming a term to describe something phony. It came to be applied to civilians who entered the military as officers and who, therefore, were about as valuable as a phony "goldbrick".

The term was ultimately extended to include military personnel who were goofing off. Eventually the term came into use outside the military.
7. Which of the following metals is not one of the four metals found in seawater in the highest concentration?

Answer: Manganese

Seawater is estimated to contain about 8,000,000 tons of gold. This works out to a concentration of .004 mg per ton of seawater. No profitable method for extraction seems likely to be devised.
8. From which planet did the evil space aliens come in the 1950s cartoon show "Ruff & Reddy"?

Answer: Munimula

Coming to television in 1957, Ruff & Reddy was the first Hanna-Barbera production. The evil alien robots came from "Munimula", aluminum spelled backwards. Hanna and Barbera had previously worked for MGM's cartoon studio where they had been the creators of "Tom & Jerry". All of the answer choices are metals spelled backwards.
9. Mr. Boddy has met his end under suspicious circumstances. His body was found leaning against the wall of his bedroom in his decaying mansion. The detectives surmise that the pile of paint chips on the floor may have been produced as he tried to etch the name of his murderer in the peeling paint of his bedroom wall. His wife's dresser has been found to contain a small bottle of arsenic. The housekeeper's closet contains a large vial of mercury. The police inspector claims that there are scratches on the window that could only have been made by beryllium fragments. The autopsy has found clear-cut evidence that Mr. Boddy perished due to advanced plumbism. What is the guilty metal?

Answer: Lead

Plumbism is lead poisoning. Arsenic is not, strictly speaking, a metal. Mr. Boddy apparently suffered from "pica", a condition in which patients eat non-nutrient materials, such as paint chips or dirt. The guilty party is, therefore, Mr. Painter, in the bedroom, with a roller and a bucket of lead-based paint.
10. Which of the following four poets did not write during the Roman Golden Age of Literature (e.g. during the reign of Augustus)?

Answer: Homer

Homer wrote "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" prior to 800 BC. The other three poets all wrote during the reign of Augustus.
