Unlike many artists, Caravaggio was famous during his life but was largely forgotten after his death at the age of 38. It was not until the 20th century that his true contribution to art was recognized. He lead a turbulent life, frequently involved in brawls, spent time in jail on several occasions and was even subject of a death warrant ordered by the Pope.
