Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who, or what, is "Scaramouche"?

Answer: All of these

Willard Phule, the main character of "Phule's Company" by Robert Aspirin, used Scaramouche as his first moniker in the Space Legion. After his first court martial he was forced to change his alias to Jester.
Scaramouche is also mentioned in the Queen Song "Bohemian Rhapsody", which, by the way, was recently voted the single most popular Rock and Roll song of all time in England. (Specifically " I see a little Silhouette-o of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, can you do the Fandango? Thunderbolts and lightning very very frightening me!")
2. George Carlin's single most famous comedy selection is known as "Seven Words". What are these words?

Answer: Things you cannot say on television

This is a family site, so I cannot tell you what the words were, but they deal primarily with reproduction and elimination.
3. According to the many "Star Wars" novels, are all of the main characters from the movies still alive?

Answer: No

Sadly, according to the novel "Vector Prime", by R.A. Salvatore, Chewbacca is now deceased. He was killed on Sernpidal when a moon, pulled out of its orbit by a Yuuzhan Vong creature, crashed into the planet. While extremely upsetting to most "Star Wars" fans, the death of Chewbacca was handled very well by this author, who has written such novels as "Star Wars: Episode 2, Attack of the Clones", "Mortalis", and is perhaps most famous for creating the Drow Elf known as Drizzit Do'Urdan, for the "Forgotten Realms" series of books.
4. Joel L. Rosenberg wrote a series of novels called "The Guardians of the Flame". What is the name of the main character?

Answer: Karl Cullinane

Karl Cullinane (Barak), Walter Slovotsky (Hakim), Luigi Ricetti (Aristobulus), James Michael Finnegan (Ahira), Doria Perlman (Doria of the Healing Hand), Andrea Andropolis (Lotana), and Jason Parker (Einar Lightfingers), begin playing what they think is a game, similar to "Dungeons and Dragons", only to be swept into the world that the game they were playing is based on, by their "Games master" Arthur Simpson Dieghton (Arta Myrdhan).

After a series of adventures they are more or less forced to make a promise to spend the rest of their lives in this world, doing everything possible to rid it of slavery.
5. The prefix AD before the number of a United States Naval vessel indicates that that ship belongs to which class?

Answer: Destroyer Tender

As near as I can find the prefix AD stands for advanced deployability. The most current class of Destroyer Tender is the "Yellowstone" class, which has a length of 643', is 85' wide, and carries a crew of 1500. Destroyer Tenders are one of the few naval vessels that are allowed to carry female crew members.

While a Tender may carry ammunition for all naval weapons, the only armament they carry for their own protection are 2 .50 calibre machine guns, and either 2 or 4 m-1 rifles equipped with grenade launchers. (This does not include the .45 Cal pistols and 12 and 16 gauge shotguns carried by the Masters at Arms on board.) In a combat theatre, all other naval vessels, including Battleships and Aircraft Carriers, are under orders to protect the Tender class ships at any and all cost, including maneuvering to intercept incoming missiles if possible. Several Tender class vessels have been refitted into Repair Ships, and given the secondary designation of AR. During the Gulf War the U.S.S. Acaidia (AD-42) was the first Destroyer Tender to be deployed to that combat theatre, and upon it's return was nicknamed "The Pregnant Ship", referring to the high number of female crew members who returned in a state of, to put it delicately, expectancy.
6. True or false? The Alan Parsons Project wrote and performed a song based on an Edgar Allan Poe poem.

Answer: True

The Alan Parsons Project was a fairly obscure Rock band of the late '70s and early 80's. One of the band's early hits was called "The Raven", based on Poe's poem of the same name.
7. What is the official designation of the A-10 fighter/bomber?

Answer: Thunderbolt II

While the A-10 is most commonly called the "Warthog" because of its ungainly appearance, the actual name is the "Thunderbolt II". Carrying a .30mm 6-barrel Vulcan cannon, which fires a slug of depleted Uranium, and several Phalanx missiles, the "Thunderbolt II" is also known as the "Tank killer".
8. "It was a bright, cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.." is the first line of what famous novel?

Answer: 1984

Written by George Orwell, 1984 is one of the most frightening anti-communistic novels ever written, describing a world where England has been taken over by the communist party, where no move goes unwatched, and even thoughts can lead to death, should the "Thought Police" find out that you are thinking even slightly seditious thoughts.
9. Anyone who has seen "Pulp Fiction" knows that Vincent's last name is Vega. What is Jules' (Samuel L. Jackson) last name?

Answer: Winfield

This is only mentioned once in the movie (I did say this stuff was obscure). The bartender at Marsallus's bar opens the door and says " Vincent Vega our man in Amsterdam, Jules Winnfield, our man in Inglewood, get in here!"
10. Jean Claude Van-Damme was a martial arts champion before becoming a movie star.

Answer: True

Before he changed his name, Jean Claude Van-Braun was a true Martial Arts expert. His first movie "No Retreat, No Surrender", in which he played a Mafia Martial Arts enforcer, gave him a taste for the Big Screen, and he has never looked back. When asked in an interview if he thought that he could beat Chuck Norris in a tournament style match, he replied that he would have to completely retrain himself before going back into competition, because he had changed his style from actual fighting, to a style that looked good on the movie screen.
