Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Literature: In which book would you find the characters Ralph, Piggy and Jack?

Answer: Lord of the Flies

"Lord of the Flies" was a powerful 1954 novel written by William Golding. The book told the story of several British boys stranded on an uninhibited island, pitting civilization against savagery. Jack, Ralph, Piggy, Roger, Simon, Sam and Eric find they must learn how to govern themselves - a difficult lesson to learn.
"The Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien became a bad 'hobbit' for many.
"Lord Jim" was by Joseph Conrad who also wrote "The Heart of Darkness".
"The Lords of Discipline" was authored by Pat Conroy.
2. Movies: Who played the movie roles of Irma La Douce, Sweet Charity and Madame Sousatzka?

Answer: Shirley MacLaine

Shirley McLean Beaty was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1934. This multi-talented author, singer, dancer and actress played the lead role in the 1969 musical "Sweet Charity" by Neil Simon. She was also Irma in "Irma La Douce", a 1963 comedy with Jack Lemmon, directed by Billy Wilder.

In 1988 Shirley was "Madame Sousatzka", a film about a piano instructor who takes on a Bengali student. Gwen Verdon was in the original 1966 Broadway show "Sweet Charity", directed by her then husband Bob Fosse. Anne Bancroft starred with MacLaine in "Turning Point", and Meryl Streep's been in just about everything else.
3. Music: Who was the first Hispanic musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Answer: Carlos Santana

Mexican songwriter and guitarist, Carlos Santana, was the first to blend rock, jazz and Latin American music as part of the band Santana in 1967. Included among his many hits are "Oye Como Va" (1970) and "Black Magic Woman" (1974). He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio in 1998.
Ritchie Valens ("La Bamba") went down in an airplane "the day the music died".
Trini Lopez sang "Lemon Tree", and was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 2003.
Ricky Martin is still "Livin' la Vida Loca".
4. People: Which John is NOT an actor?

Answer: John Milton

John Milton (1608-1674) was an English poet during Oliver Cromwell's leadership. He is often considered one of the most learned of all English poets. By 1654 Milton was totally blind from either retinal detachment or glaucoma. The remarkable thing is, his most famous work, "Paradise Lost", was not published until 1667.
John Ritter ("Three's Company") died far too young.
John Malkovich is "Being John Malkovich" "In the Line of Fire".
John Cleese is one of the members of "Monty Python's Flying Circus".
5. Religion: What is the name of the religion founded by L. Ron Hubbard?

Answer: Scientology

Lafayette Ron Hubbard (1911-1986) or LRH was known as a fantasy and science fiction writer. In May 1950 he developed a self-help system which he called Dianetics. In 1952, expanding on this original idea by adding doctrines and rituals, he created a new religion called Scientology.

The basic premise of the religion is "that man is an immortal and spiritual being and his experiences extend beyond a single lifetime". While Scientology began as a non-profit religion, on April 6, 2016 it becomes classified as a taxable business. Writer Isaac Asimov called it "gibberish", but it is said to have over ten million members worldwide.
6. Sci/tech: Which of the following scientists was known for his work with pigeons?

Answer: B.F. Skinner

B.F. Skinner (1904-1990) was a behaviorist and social philosopher, and the author of the 1948 Utopian novel, "Walden 2". He developed an 'operant conditioning apparatus' which allowed him to study an animal interacting with its environment (now known as "The Skinner Box").

He began with rats and worked his way up the food chain to pigeons; the pigeons had to peck a disc in order to obtain food. This led Skinner to the conclusion that reinforcement was crucial to learning new behavior. Fibonacci examined how quickly rabbits breed. Pavlov used dogs in conditioning experiments. Harlow used monkeys for his social isolation theories.
7. Sports: Jackie Robinson was the first African-American to play Major League Baseball in the National League. Who was the first in the American League?

Answer: Larry Doby

Jackie Robinson (#42) played with the Brooklyn Dodgers in April of 1947. Larry Doby (1923-2003) began to play for the American League team, the Cleveland Indians, in July of that same year, making him the second black player to break baseball's color barrier. Doby was the first player to go directly from the Negro Leagues to the Major League. He won a World Series Championship with the Indians in 1948.
Irvin played for the New York Giants (not the football team) in 1949.
Minoso was with the Chicago White Sox from 1951.
Ernie ("Let's play two") Banks played for the Chicago Cubs in 1953.
8. Television: Which TV show was George Clooney NOT on?

Answer: Diff'rent Strokes

George Clooney has been around for quite some time now. On "The Facts of Life" he played George Burnett who was hired as a handyman to help rebuild Edna's Edibles after the store burned down in 1985. George was on Roseanne in the 1980s as Booker Brooks, the foreman for Wellman Plastics. In the drama "Sisters", in the early 1990s, he was Detective James Falconer playing opposite Sela Ward. He was also on the comedy "E/R" as Ace, the ER technician and, of course, he was Dr. Doug Ross on the drama "ER".
I can't imagine how he missed out on "Diff'rent Strokes"!
9. Video Games: The Video Game Hall of Fame announced the inductees for its first class in 2015. Which of the following was NOT chosen?

Answer: Donkey Kong

How could they NOT pick "Donkey Kong", and how about "Space Invaders"?
But I should probably list the six who were chosen before I complain about which wasn't. The inductees (drum roll, please) were: "Pong", "Doom", "Super Mario Brothers", "Pac-Man", "Tetris" and "World of Warcraft". C'mon!
"World of Warcraft" before "Donkey Kong"? The Strong National Museum of Play recognizes all types of games, i.e., arcade, console, computer, hand-held and mobile, in its selection. They wanted to pick those games which have had a significant impact on society...and there's always next year.
10. World: Who was the first President of the United States to ride around in an 'official' government automobile in public?

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

Teddy Roosevelt (1858-1919) was the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He was preceded by William McKinley (and we know how that ended up) and followed by William Taft. Teddy was a "bully" president, a visionary and a conservationist; he was an explorer, a soldier during the Spanish-American War, an author, a statesman - perhaps one might call him a 'renaissance man'.

He championed the "Square Deal" and began construction on the Panama Canal. One of his sayings was "Believe you can and you're halfway there". I believe he was one of our greatest presidents and set the standard for those who came after.
