Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I go down the stairs to investigate a strange noise coming from my kitchen; I fear the worst and think it must be a gas leak. I discover that it is far worse than a gas leak. I discover that an American Copperhead is living in my cupboards. What is an American Copperhead?

Answer: Snake

The American Copperhead, or just Copperhead, snake is native to North America and is a poisonous snake. The Copperhead snake lives in rocky, wooded and mountainous regions of North America. It is recognisable by the chestnut and brown striped pattern on its body and of course its copper coloured head. Copperheads grow to be about 50cm to 100cm in length; they are not known to be aggressive, but will attack if threatened.
2. Great! Now I've just being bitten by a poisonous creature and I haven't even had breakfast. I feel OK, so I think I will have some breakfast. I decide to make myself an Irish breakfast. What food is missing from my Irish breakfast if I have an egg, bacon, tomato, and black pudding?

Answer: Sausage

A sausage can be made from any type of meat. The meat is ground down and pushed into a thin skin layer to hold its shape. Pork is the most common type of meat used in sausages. Herbs such as thyme, parsley and basil can be added to the meat to give it different flavours.

Other kinds of meat used to make sausages are turkey, venison, veal, beef or smoked liver. Black pudding is also known as blood sausage. Black pudding is made from pig's blood, grains, cereals and fat.
3. Just before I leave for work, I grab a bottle from the press which I believe to be a bottle of soda pop. I open the bottle and take a drink. That doesn't taste very good. Oh no, I have just drunk a poisonous liquid! Great, which of these liquids are poisonous?

Answer: Strychnine

The poison strychnine is derived from the plant Strychnos nux Vomica, which can be found in Southern Asia and Australia. Strychnine is described as a white, odourless and bitter powder; it can be mixed with a solution. Originally used to cure ailments, it was given to people in pill form. Now it is commonly used as a pesticide, primarily to kill rats. Strychnine poisoning can be treated in hospitals if detected early and small doses may not be fatal if medical attention is sought immediately.
4. I ring a friend of mine and he advises me to go straight to a hospital; he says I will know if I was affected by the poison if my muscles begin to twitch. What is a more correct way of describing muscle twitches?

Answer: Spasms

A muscle spasm can be described as involuntary contractions of the muscles. Spasms occur suddenly and usually don't last long but can be painful. Muscle spasms are also known as cramps. One cause of cramps of spasms in muscles could be high levels of calcium in the muscles or a buildup of lactic acid due to a lack of oxygen reaching the muscles during exercise.
5. I decide to call my manager at work to tell him that I can't come in today because I have being bitten by a poisonous animal and I have accidentally ingested a poisonous liquid. He responds to my plight in a very unemotional and even mannered way. What word is used to describe someone who is indifferent and unemotional?

Answer: Stoic

The term stoic originates from the ancient Greek school of philosophy founded by Zeno. The philosophy is that a person can obtain happiness and virtue by submission to destiny and natural law. Another way of looking at it is that a person should be free from passion, unmoved by joy or grief. Stoic persons could be described as restrained or indifferent to the world around them.
6. I decide that the quickest way to get to hospital is to drive there myself. I get into my car. In Europe, my car would be described as an 'estate'. What would my car be called if I lived in North America?

Answer: Station wagon

A station wagon describes a car where the roof has been extended back to the rear of the car, unlike a saloon car where the roof ends above the back seat of the car and the trunk extrudes out from the back of the car. A station wagon or estate-type car has one or more rows of seats behind the driver's seat and an area behind those seats for luggage and storage. Owners of estate-type cars usually purchase them because they have large families or need to be able to transport more luggage/items. The difference between a station wagon and an SUV is that an SUV is a sports utility vehicle and some models can operate off road. Also, the driver and passengers of SUVs are seated higher than if they were seated in a station wagon/estate car.
7. I am nearly at the hospital when I suddenly see flashing lights in my rear view mirror and a loud ear-piercing noise. Oh no, it is the police! What have I done now? What word describes the noise that comes from a police car?

Answer: Siren

Have you ever heard a police siren in the distance and wondered how fast the car is travelling? Well if you apply some physics you can determine exactly how fast a police car is travelling. All you need to do is apply the Doppler Effect formula and you can determine how fast the police car is travelling.
8. After the policeman has given me a ticket for speeding, it transpires that I have a number of unpaid parking tickets on the system. This means that I am in trouble and can expect to appear in court sometime soon. What method of notification will be used to notify me of my court date?

Answer: Summons

A summons is issued by a court of law after a police report has been processed and it has been determined that a law has being broken. It informs an individual that they are required to appear at a court of law on a particular date to answer to charges that have been placed against them. Receiving a summons and not appearing in court on the date outlined can result in arrest, incarceration and a possible fine.
9. Can this day get any worse? I have been bitten, poisoned, been stopped by the police and now I am going to be called to court also. All these events have happened to me one after the other. What word is used to describe a chain of events?

Answer: Sequence of events

The simple definition of the word sequence is two or more things in a successive order. The word sequence has different meanings depending on the context that it is used in. For example, in the Roman Catholic Church a sequence is a hymn sung between the gradual and the Gospel.

In music, it is a harmonic pattern repeated at different pitches without a key change. It is derived from the Medieval Latin word sequentia.
10. I get to the hospital and I am immediately placed on a trolley. The nurse gives me a sedative to make me relax. As I drift off, my last thought is how dreamlike the whole day has been. What is another word to describe this dreamlike experience I've had?

Answer: Surreal Experience

The word surreal is also associated with the art world and the painting styles of surrealist artists like Salvador Dali and Max Ernst. Their art could be described as dreamlike in their representation.
