Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which one of these American actors is often given credit as being the first person to break a backboard while employed as a professional basketball player?

Answer: Chuck Conners

The 6'6" Chuck Connors is possibly most well known for his role as Lucas McCain in the television program "The Rifleman" (1958-1963). Many people are unaware that before he became an actor, he was a professional athlete. He played both professional basketball and baseball. On November 5, 1946, while a member of the Boston Celtics, he took a shot at the hoop that shattered the backboard.

It turned out that the backboard was installed incorrectly. He played baseball professionally for both the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs.
2. What will happen to a female ferret that is in heat if she does not find a male to mate with?

Answer: She will eventually die.

Female ferrets have an unusual reproductive system. Female ferrets display induced ovulation, which means she will remain in heat/estrus until the physical act of mating is performed. If she does not mate, the high levels of estrogen in her blood stream will result in severe aplastic anemia, which will be fatal.
3. What do windshield wipers and liquid paper have in common?

Answer: They were invented by women.

In 1903, American Mary Anderson received a patent for her design for the first working windshield wiper. In 1958, Bette Nesmith Graham received a patent for her invention of a substance she called 'liquid paper'. It was used to correct typing errors at a period of time when a single typing error could result in having to retype the whole page of information.
4. If someone was to say they were driving on U.S. Highway 301, which direction would they be traveling?

Answer: North or south

While it may seem to most American drivers that there is no rhyme or reason to the highway/freeway system, they are wrong. If the road is an odd number, such as U.S. Hwy 301, it runs north and south. If it is an even number, it runs east and west. There really is a method to the madness.
5. If someone experienced Heteropaternal superfecundation what would be the probable outcome?

Answer: They would give birth to twins who had different fathers.

Heteropaternal superfecundation is the feritilization of two eggs, that were produced during the same menstrual cycle, by the sperm of two different men. While it is not an uncommon occurrence in dogs or cats, it is much more rare in humans. This basically says that fraternal twins can have different fathers if the mother had sex with two different men within approx. 24 hours.
6. What appears on the obverse side of the coin known as a "loonie"?

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II

Introduced in 1987, a "loonie" is the nickname for the Canadian one-dollar coin. The reverse of this gold-colored coin features the image of the common loon, while the obverse features the smiling silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II. When the two-dollar coin was introduced in 1996 it was promptly nicknamed the "toonie".
7. Which of the following is, geographically speaking, the largest state in Australia?

Answer: Western Australia

If you're from Australia you might not think this to be a difficult question. But for many Americans, this is not something that was taught in school. For those who don't know, Western Australia is geographically the largest state in Australia covering over 2,526,875 sq. km. (976,790 sq. mi). Over 90% of the population in this state live in the southwest corner. Tourism and mining form the backbone of the economy.
8. Ronda Rousey was a noted athlete in which of the following sports?

Answer: MMA

Ronda Rousey was one of the premier fighters in the sport known as mixed martial arts, or MMA. She is also known for her acting skills and has appeared in movies and on television. She has a 4th degree black belt in Judo and was the first American woman to medal in this sport at the Summer Olympics.
9. Milled sugar is the alternate name for granulated sugar.

Answer: False

This is false. Most sugar is milled. This includes confectioners sugar, brown sugar and invert sugar. All of them are used in the making of sweet treats.
10. Nyala, duiker and nilgai are all varieties of which of the following things?

Answer: Antelope

These are all varieties of antelope. The nyala is a large African antelope with lyre shaped horns. The duiker is a very small Sub-Saharan antelope with tiny horns. The nilgai is a common Asian antelope that is often called a blue bull.
