Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It had English and Welsh origins. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: Where did the surname "Jones" come from?

The surname "Jones" is very common in England and Wales. The word comes from Middle English, which was when the first name "John" grew in popularity. Boys were often referred to as their father's son. "Jones" derived from the tradition of certain children being referred to as "John's son".

A Spinning Jenny (not Jones) was an 18th century machine used in weaving. With between 30 and 50 of them a year, the UK has a higher proportion of tornadoes than almost anywhere else in the world (based on its land area).
2. John the Baptist. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: Who told King Herod that his marriage was unlawful?

"John" became a popular name in 14th century England as a result of the biblical characters who also went by "John". The popularity of "John" led to the development of "Jones" ("John's son") as a surname.

John the Baptist was a relative of Jesus and was distinct from John the Evangelist, who wrote John's Gospel. Revelation was also written by someone called John, though it may have been a different John to the gospel writer (the name was also popular way back when!). John the Baptist was executed before the New Testament texts were written.
3. Jones. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: What is the name of an impact crater on Mars?

20th century English astronomer, Harold Spencer Jones, had a Martian impact crater named after him. Spencer Jones helped to more accurately determine the distance between the Earth and the sun. He was knighted for his services to astronomy in 1943. He also had a crater on the moon named after him.
4. Tom Jones. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: Which Welsh artist sang "She's a Lady"?

"She's a Lady" was written by Paul Anka and was recorded by Tom Jones in 1971. Tom Jones was born in South Wales in 1940. He rose to fame in the 1960s and provided the vocals for the soundtracks to movies including "What's New Pussycat?" and the theme to the James Bond film "Thunderball".

He went on to perform regularly in Las Vegas where his shows were infamous due to the women who threw their underwear and hotel room keys on to the stage.
5. Over 900 members of an American cult were involved in a mass murder-suicide. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: What happened in Jonestown, Guyana?

Jim Jones was a charismatic man who set up his own church in America. When questions were asked about Jones' treatment of his congregation, he moved with hundreds of them to a commune in Guyana that he had been building. In 1978, a US Congressman went to Guyana to investigate rumours of kidnap and abuse.

He was killed by members of the Jonestown cult, which led Jim Jones to order the mass-suicide of the congregation. Over 900 people were given a fruit drink that had been laced with cyanide.
6. Jones! If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: What was the name of a New Zealand TV channel that was launched in 2013?

Jones! was created to show repeats of hit UK and US television shows from the late 20th century. The titles of Adele's first three albums were numbers: "19", "21", and "25". In Douglas Adams' novel series, the answer to the ultimate question was also a number (42 to be precise).
7. Catherine Zeta-Jones. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: Who starred in the 2002 film, "Chicago"?

Catherine Zeta-Jones was born in Wales and began her acting career on the stage as a child. Her first screen role was in the French-Italian film, "1001 Nights" in 1990. In 2002, Zeta-Jones starred in the musical "Chicago" with Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere. She won an Academy Award for the movie, which was based on the stage musical of the same name.
8. A comic strip. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: Where did the phrase "Keeping up with the Joneses" originate?

"Keeping up with the Joneses" is an idiom about jealousy. It refers to people who want to own the same expensive objects as their friends and neighbours in order to maintain their social standing. It can also refer to experiences like holidays and sports clubs.

In 1913, Pop Mormand started a series of comic strips about a fictional family trying - and failing - to copy the lifestyle of their neighbours, the Joneses.
9. The bottom of the sea. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: What does "Davy Jones' locker" refer to?

A jonesfish isn't a real thing and neither was the J0N35 lunar rover. Grace Jones had a fairly public private life but was never married underwater (though scuba diving weddings do happen!). In fact, it could be said that there have been weddings in Davy Jones' locker as the phrase means the bottom of the sea. On a less cheerful note, it is normally used to refer to the seabed as a sailor's final resting place when they have died at sea.

The origins of Davy Jones and his locker are uncertain, but the are referred to in "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson and in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film franchise, among many other places.
10. Indiana. If this is the answer, what is the question?

Answer: What was the nickname of a fictional archaeologist?

His full name was Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr. but he often went by his nickname, Indiana Jones. The character was originally played by Harrison Ford in the movie series which began in 1981 with "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Indiana Jones was an archaeology professor who occasionally went out into the field to recover valuable artifacts.
