Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In tennis, what would the composition of the teams be if the players were playing mixed doubles?

Answer: one man and one woman on each of two teams

Mixed doubles is not generally the most popular version of international professional tennis. There has been sufficient interest in it, however, to add it as an Olympic sport in 2012.
2. When Al Gore said, "A zebra does not change its spots", of what was this an example?

Answer: a mixed metaphor

A mixed metaphor is created when parts of two distinct metaphors are combined. Another example is when Tom Wolfe wrote in "The Bonfire of the Vanities": "All at once he was alone in this noisy hive with no place to roost".
3. Which sort of meat would you not expect to find on your plate if you ordered the English mixed grill?

Answer: braised lamb shanks

A mixed grill is composed of meats and vegetables (e.g. tomatoes and mushrooms) which are broiled or grilled. Although many cuisines have some sort of equivalent to an English mixed grill, the genuine British version often also includes lamb's kidney, calf's liver and a bit of ham steak or gammon. There are no braised meats in a mixed grill.
4. Suppose you had six pizzas cut into quarters, and somebody took one slice out of each of two of them. Express the amount of pizza remaining as a MIXED number.

Answer: Five and one half (5 1/2) pizzas

A mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction; for example, five and one half. A fraction is proper only if the numerator is smaller than the denominator, thus 11/2 is an improper fraction. Numbers which contain decimals are not mixed.
5. Which of the following is not considered a mixed drink?

Answer: Scotch on the rocks

By definition, a mixed drink contains at least one alcoholic beverage (usually hard liquor but possibly beer or wine) and one other liquid ingredient. The alcoholic beverage(s) is/are called the base spirit(s) and the added liquid is sometimes called the mixer. Mixers may include fruit juices, carbonated beverages, bittering agents, syrups and even milk or cream.
6. What does it mean if a plot of real property is zoned for "mixed use"?

Answer: Both commercial and residential uses are permitted.

It wasn't until zoning laws restricted the use of real property to industrial, commercial, institutional or residential uses that the concept of mixed use arose. In modern land-use planning, the term most often refers to a regulation which allows people to live and work in the same area, sometimes even in the same building.
7. In most schools of mixed martial arts, which of the following is permitted?

Answer: the rules generally permit all of these

Mixed martial arts is a relatively newer and ever-evolving sport which draws on the long history of its component fighting styles. It may include elements of boxing, amateur wrestling, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, judo, karate and several other combat sports.

The term "mixed martial arts" used to describe this style of fighting is attributed to television critic Howard Rosenberg who first used it in 1993.
8. Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1773), once wrote, "Religion is by no means a proper subject of conversation in a mixed company". What did the British statesman mean by "mixed company"?

Answer: a group in which both men and women are present

The phrase "mixed company" was first used to protect women from topics of conversation and usages of language which were considered inappropriate to their ears. Over time, its use both narrowed to include only profanity and obscenity, and expanded to include children within its protections.
9. Both NATO and the US Department of Defense use the following definition for what term: "In naval mine warfare, a collection of mines of various types, firing systems, sensitivities, arming delays and ship counter settings"?

Answer: mixed bag

The strategy of laying a mixed bag of naval mines is to make them harder to detect, harder to remove, and harder to evade than those in a homogeneous field. This military phrase is also used in a civilian context to describe any assorted collection of unlike things.
10. The Roman Catholic Church discourages its members from entering into mixed marriages. What is meant by "mixed marriage" in this context?

Answer: a marriage between a Roman Catholic and a non-Roman Catholic

The Roman Catholic Church permits but does not encourage marriage between one Roman Catholic and another person who is not a Roman Catholic. At different times in different places, there have been laws against marriage between people of different races.

There may be strong cultural, ethnic and familial pressures against marriage outside of one's own nationality. The term "mixed marriage" has been used to describe each of these situations, as well, but not specifically in terms of the Roman Catholic Church.
