Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many grams can 1 party balloon full of helium lift?

Answer: 14 grams

Not much, is it? The source for this information was the 21st of December 2002 issue of New Scientist. The magazine also said that global helium reserves are due to run out within 50 years, a cause for concern as more and more potential uses are being found for the unusual gas.
2. Approximately how many times more massive is the sun than the earth?

Answer: 333,000

Sure is. Its radius at its equator is approximately 109 times that of Earth, and its apparent size from Earth is about 32 arc minutes. That's pretty big.
3. Which of these ratios is phi (the divine proportion)?

Answer: (1 + the square root of five) / 2 : 1

This fascinating ratio has been used in art for centuries; it is said to be the ratio that is the most pleasing to the eye. It has been used in the Parthenon in Greece and in the pyramids of Egypt. Even more amazingly, it also occurs naturally, for example, in the spirals of seashells and the shape of galaxies.

It has the property that if it is the ratio of the length of a shorter portion of a line to the longer portion, it will also be the ratio of the length of the longer portion to the whole line.

Many more unique properties are being discovered as more research is being done.
4. How many times did Cosmo Kramer make his quirky entrance into Jerry's apartment in the comedy series "Seinfeld"?

Answer: 284

A very entertaining series. If you've never seen it, I'm surprised. The show, originally entitled 'Jerry', follows the experiences of Jerry Seinfeld, a New Yorkan comedian, and three of his friends; George Costanza, a neurotic, balding, aggressive man, Elaine Bennis, a quirky, irritable woman, and Cosmo Kramer, an off-beat hipster.
5. From which two words is the acronym FORTRAN (a widely used computer language) formed?

Answer: FORmula TRANslator

FORTRAN is used for arithmetical, algebraic, scientific and technical applications.
6. Which famous British actor plays Donald Sinclair in the comedy movie "Rat Race"?

Answer: John Cleese

A fairly entertaining movie. If you haven't seen it, you probably should. The movie tells the story of a group of innocent tourists who inadvertently get caught up as the subjects of a betting game between Mr Sinclair and his multi-millionaire acquaintances.
7. Which of these South American countries was home of the Choco tribe?

Answer: Colombia

This tribe used the skin toxins of the poison dart frog to poison the arrows it used for hunting. Their territory does extend into modern Panama also.
8. The metre is defined as one ten-millionth of the distance between the equator and the North Pole, running in a straight line through Paris?

Answer: False

This is how the metre was originally defined, although after the discovery that the earth is not completely spherical but actually an oblate spheroid, the metre was redefined as 1650763.73 wavelengths of the reddish-orange light emitted by the isotope Krypton-86.
9. The name for the hobby of collecting of beer mats is grabatology?

Answer: False

Grabatology is the term for the hobby of collecting of ties. Tegestology is the term for the hobby of collecting of beer mats. I'm sure you needed to know that.
10. Who was the first Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Australia?

Answer: Edmund Barton

Edmund Barton was elected in 1901, the year of Federation. He represented the Protectionist Party.
