Answer: Scott McCloud

In the '60's, the fictional McCloud was the title character of 'Space Angel'(another ultra-limited animation effort from the makers of 'Clutch {Cargo');} the real-life McCloud has created the 'Zot!' cult comic and the books 'Understanding Comics' and 'Reinventing Comics'.

Answer: It was a real-life cop's badge number

Although Webb was a baseball fan who knew 714 was Babe Ruth's lifetime home run record, and July 14th was his mother's birthday, 714 was the badge number of Sgt. Dan Cooke, a real-life LAPD detective who was technical director for many "Dragnet" episodes and let Webb use his number for the character Joe Friday.
