Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who developed a theory of evolution by natural selection independently of Charles Darwin?

Answer: Alfred Russel Wallace

In the same way that Darwin went to the Galapagos Islands to develop his theory, Wallace (1823-1913) travelled to the Malay Archipelago where, in 1858 he came to the realisation that some individuals from each species survive because they have adapted better to their environment. ("Survival of the fittest".) Darwin's theory had been written out in manuscript form in 1844, but never published.

He was nervous about public reaction and originally intended to have his work published posthumously. Darwin then received something of a rude shock when he received from Wallace a paper entitled "On the Tendency of Varieties to Depart Indefinitely from the Original Type" which mirrored Darwin's earlier manuscript.
2. What type of meat was originally used to prepare Champvallon?
