True Men's Quiz, for Women

Having played most of the quizzes in this category (for both sides) I found that the quizzes about the guys were not about general guy stuff, but were instead mostly about renowned athletes, and cars. I come to rectify that.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Many young active males want to gain weight. The only way to do this is to consume more calories. Keeping activity the same, how many calories are required to gain one pound (0.454 kg) of body mass?

Answer: 3,500 calories

Losing weight works the same as gaining it. Your net calorie intake needs to decrease by 3,500 to drop one pound of body mass. This can be achieved by eating 1,500 fewer calories and burning 2,000 more calories than normal. Gaining or dropping a pound per week is approximately the quickest weight change you should ever experience. Any faster can be dangerous.
2. The term "Drop the Ball" is a slang term meaning to fail in one's responsibilities. Which of the following predominantly male sports does it come from?

Answer: Baseball

"Drop the Ball" is a term with its origins in Baseball. It refers to a fielder failing in their responsibility to catch the ball.
3. When using a hammer to drive a nail into a piece of wood, where along the handle is it correct to hold the hammer?

Answer: The very end of the handle

A hammer is swung primarily by an action of the wrist. Holding the handle at the end is the correct position. The idea that the handle is there as a counterbalance is incorrect. The hammer should be as far out of balance as possible.
4. For a bicycle on level ground, what is the correct way to mount a set of training wheels?

Answer: On the rear wheel, with both training wheels slightly off the ground

Training wheels are meant to teach balance, by preventing the bicycle from falling over when it is out of balance. If the wheels are on the front wheel, they will force it to turn, and the bicycle will fall. If they both touch the ground, the bicycle can't tilt at all, and is basically a quadricycle. The only way to learn balance is by being out of balance.
5. If you're sport fishing, often you have a lure that floats, but you want it to be slightly under the water. From the fishing rod towards the end of the line, what is the correct order of lure, float, and sinker?

Answer: Float, Sinker, Lure

The sinker is a weight which drops below the water, and pulls the lure down. The float keeps the whole thing up. If the sinker is further down the line than the lure, it will drag behind the lure, and the fish will be distracted by it, and essentially ignore the lure.

When the lure hangs out behind the sinker, it will actually drift higher than the sinker, and will be the part furthest back, so the chance that a fish will go after it is much higher.
6. Wood is used for campfires, woodstoves, etc. Which of the following measurments of wood contains the most combustible material?

Answer: Cord

A cord of wood occupies 128 cubic feet, and is stacked in a 4' x 4' x 8' configuration, with all logs facing the same direction and with as little air space as possible. A face cord when stacked is 4' x 8' x the length of the sticks, usually between 12" and 24", so is therefore a fraction of a cord.

A bush cord is a collection of large logs that fill a space 4' x 4' x 8' and has much more air space than a regular cord, due to the size and irregular shape of the pieces. A tossed cord is wood that is tossed into a space 4' x 4' x 8' and therefore does not settle together and so has more airspace than a regular cord.
7. When out camping, it is important to be able to build a fire. In order to start a fire, you need three stages of burnable material. Which is the correct order for the burnable materials to be burned?

Answer: Tinder, Kindling, Fuel

Tinder refers to small grasses, lint, leaves, bark, and paper, which are very easy to light. Kindling refers to twigs, switches, and small branches which can't be lit by directly, but will start burning with the help of tinder. Fuel refers to logs, either split or whole, which burn long and hot.

The can't be lit directly (without the use of accelerants) but will catch from the flames and heat of kindling.
8. Many people are familiar with the many stages of cooking meat, and especially steak. People order steaks Rare, Medium Rare, Medium, and Well Done. What is the stage of cooking, ordered primarily by men, which comes before rare?

Answer: Blue

When a steak is cooked blue, it is placed on a very hot grill for a very short time. It is only cooked approximately 45 seconds on each side, just enough to sear the outside. The grill is hot enough to kill the bacteria inside, but not to cook the inside. Some restaurants will not prepare meat to this level, and some will make you sign the receipt as a release of responsibility.
9. What is NOT the name of a tool used for sharpening a kitchen knife?

Answer: Strop

A strop is a tool used for sharpening and polishing razor blades. They are essentially a piece of rough leather with a polishing compound applied. A barber will use this tool.
10. What tool is NOT likely to be found in a woodworking workshop?

Answer: Shears

Shears are used for pruning in a garden, or for cutting metal. A lathe is a rotary tool for shaping round objects like chair spokes. Chisels are cutting tools for wood and in some cases concrete or rock. A plane is used to remove a thin layer of wood from a flat surface.
