Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our team leader Wattleido liked to help people in need. The British Royal family has also worked hard to raise awareness of worthy charities and involved themselves in acquiring donations to fund charities. In September 2005, Prince William became a patron of one of his mother's favourite charities. Can you name the charity, of which Princess Diana was also a patron?

Answer: Centrepoint

Centrepoint was founded by the Rev. Kenneth Leech in a Soho Church in London on 16th December 1969. It is a charity that helps homeless young children.

Send a Cow is a charity that helps African farmers grow their own food. Prince Charles became president of the charity in 2010.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has been the president of Barnado's, a charity that supports children affected by many causes, including drug misuse, disability, mental health problems, sexual abuse and homelessness.

Princess Anne has been the president of Save the Children. The charity sends aid and help to educate children in over 120 countries around the world.

2. Our team leader liked to laugh - so we sent her a court jester but, alas, he forgot his line. Can you help him? 'The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle. The chalice from the palace has the...'

Answer: ...brew that is true.

The quote is from the 1956 movie "The Court Jester" starring the unforgettable and awesome Danny Kaye.

Danny had to defeat a superior opponent in single combat. The plan seemed simple enough: poison the other man before the fight (using wine from the vessel with the pestle), and emerge victorious.

Unfortunately the chalice from the palace broke and had to be replaced with a flagon (a flagon with a dragon). As the first mnemonic no longer worked, a second one had to be created. What happened then is well-nigh impossible to put into words. You really need to see this for yourself!

3. One of Wattleido's hobbies was singing. I wonder if she ever sang in the rain. "Singing in the Rain", as we all know, was sung by Gene Kelly in the film of the same name. But in which Stanley Kubrick film was this song featured?

Answer: A Clockwork Orange

The film "A Clockwork Orange" was written, produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1971. It was adapted from a 1962 novel by Anthony Burgess. Warner Brothers withdrew the film from British distribution in 1972 at the request of Kubrick after the film had been blamed for a number of violent crimes, and it was only after his death in 1999 that the film was re-released to the cinemas and also on VHS and DVD.

4. Wattleido was interested in crafts. Incidentally, one of the earliest crafts of ancient society was soap-making. From which of these civilisations do we have the earliest recorded evidence of soap-making?

Answer: Babylon

The earliest recorded formula for making soap was found on a Babylonian clay tablet dated from around 2800 BC. The Ebers Papyrus 1600 BC records that the early Egyptians used soap for bathing regularly. Pliny the Elder recorded that the Phoenicians used goat tallow and wood ash to make soap in 600 BC. Roman legend stated that soap was discovered and got its name from Mount Sapo, where animals were sacrificed to their gods. Fats and ash from the burnt offerings ran down the slope into the River Tiber where washerwomen found that their washing and skin became cleaner. Pliny the Elder's accounts of life around 1st century AD refuted this as he stated that soap was an invention of the Gauls.

5. Wattleido said she liked the computer. I bet she saved a lot of information on it. What is the smallest unit of information of a computer?

Answer: Bit

A bit is a really small unit of information; the most it can process is the information needed for the computer to turn on. A byte, equivalent to eight bits, can store the size worth of a character, and so on.

Question by Lpez.
6. Among Wattleido's list of hobbies was philately. What is philately?

Answer: Collecting or studying postage stamps

One common method of stamp collectors has been to use steam to remove stamps from their envelopes, postcards or packaging. The next step would be to use gum hinges to stick the stamps into a stamp album. Similar stamps would be grouped together on pages, each of which would have the title of the stamp's country of origin. Special stamps can lose value by being removed from the envelopes, or by being stuck into the albums using their own gum.

If you ever watch the 1985 movie "Brewster's Millions", he shows us what not to do with a valuable stamp.

7. Acting was also one of Watleido's hobbies, so she might help to identify this bald man: Although widely known as the captain of the USS Enterprise and the founder of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, this man's greatest passion has always been to act on the stage. Who is he?

Answer: Sir Patrick Stewart

Patrick Stewart started playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the 'USS Enterprise NCC 1701 D' on the TV show "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1987. As Picard, he also starred in four "Star Trek" movies: "Generations", "First Contact", "Insurrection" and "Nemesis".

In 2000, Patrick Stewart started playing Charles Xavier in the Marvel Comic movie adaption "X-Men".

Throughout his TV and movie career Patrick Stewart stayed closely associated to the Royal Shakespeare Company, receiving much praise for his various performances on stage. Consequently, Stewart was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and was made a Knight Bachelor in 2010 for his services to drama.

8. Wattleido loved life; in fact, she listed it as one of her hobbies. Covering the period of 2005-2010, the United Nations published a list of the life expectancies throughout the world. Internationally, what position did Australia enjoy for females?

Answer: 3rd

Only females in Japan (86 years) and Hong Kong (85 years) bettered Australia on this list from 2005 to 2010. In terms of male life expectancy, Australia was rated 4th overall. Obviously a healthy place to live.

Question by C30.
9. If Wattleido's creativity turned towards cooking, specifically to making crepes, which ingredient would she put in last in her mixture?

Answer: Warm melted butter

Melted butter has to be the last ingredient because of its temperature. Pouring cold milk over the warm butter would make it curdle, and you would end up with a lot of unwanted lumps in your mixture.
