Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. George Washington - John Adams - Thomas Jefferson: They were the first three Presidents of the USA. Who was the next?

Answer: James Madison

Washington served from April 1789 to March 1797; Adams from March 1797 to March 1801; Jefferson from March 1801 to March 1809 and Madison from March 1809 to March 1817. The other three were all 20th Century Presidents. Dwight D. Eisenhower was the first President to take office in the January following an election victory (that was in 1953).
2. Siege of Boston - Martha's Vineyard - Fort Ticonderoga: What was the next in this sequence of major American Revolutionary War battles?

Answer: Bunker Hill

Those four keys dates were: April 19th 1775; May 5th 1775; May 10th 1775 and June 17th 1775. The first three were American victories, the British claimed Bunker Hill. The three wrong answers were all fought in 1776.

3. Neil Armstrong - Buzz Aldrin - Charles "Pete" Conrad: These were the first three men to walk on the moon. Who was number four?

Answer: Alan Bean

Armstrong and Aldrin walked on the moon in July 1969 while Conrad and Bean followed in their lunar footsteps in November of that year. Mitchell landed in February 1971 and Scott in July of that year.
4. "Ben" - "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough" - "Rock With You": These were Michael Jackson's first three solo US Number 1 singles. Which was the fourth?

Answer: Billie Jean

The relevant dates were 1972, 1979, 1979 and 1982. "Beat It" was Number 1 in 1982; "Thriller" only made Number 4 in 1983; and "Bad" was Number 1 in 1987. I've omitted "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", which was a duet with Siedah Garrett in 1987.
5. Geoff Hurst - Martin Peters - Geoff Hurst: These were the scorers of England's first three goals in their 4-2 victory over West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final. Who got England's fourth?

Answer: Geoff Hurst

England were the host nations for the 1966 World Cup. The final is remembered for the hat-trick scored by Hurst. It was the first time any player had scored three goals in a World Cup final.
6. George III - George IV - William IV: They're three of the last four British monarchs to rule in the 19th Century. Who was next on the list?

Answer: Victoria

George III ruled from 1760 to 1820; George IV from 1820 to 1830; William IV from 1830 to 1837; and Victoria from 1837 to 1901. The next three were crowned in the 20th century. Edward VII, 1901 to 1910; George V, 1910 to 1936 and Edward VIII, January to December 1936.
7. Delaware - Pennsylvania - New Jersey: These were the first three American states by order of entry to Union. Which was number four?

Answer: Georgia

The dates of those first four were 7th December 1787, 12th December 1787, 18th December 1787 and 2nd January 1788. The three wrong answers were, of course, the 48th (Arizona), 49th (Alaska) and 50th (Hawaii) of the Union.
8. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" - "She Loves You" - "Can't Buy Me Love": These were the first three songs by The Beatles to top the US charts. Which came next?

Answer: Love Me Do

February 1964, March 1964, April 1964, and May 1964 were the dates in question. "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and "Can't Buy Me Love" also topped the UK charts. "A Hard Day's Night", "I Feel Fine" and "Eight Days A Week" were the next three US Number Ones.
9. Conrad Hilton - Michael Wilding - Michael Todd: They were the first three men to 'walk down the aisle' with Elizabeth Taylor. Who was the next husband?

Answer: Eddie Fisher

The marriages went like this: Conrad Hilton (May 1950 to January 1951); Michael Wilding (February 1952 to January 1957); Michael Todd (February 1957 to March 1958); Eddie Fisher (May 1959 to March 1964); Richard Burton (March 1964 to June 1974); Richard Burton - again - (October 1975 to July 1976); John Warner (December 1976 to November 1982); and Larry Fortensky (October 1991 to October 1996.)
10. Mercury - Venus - Earth: Is the list of our known planets from nearest to the sun to farthest away. Which planet follows Earth?

Answer: Mars

And then we had Neptune and Pluto, except for those scientists who declared that Pluto was not a planet after all. There are many ways to remember that list. The one I learnt was: Man Very Early Made Jugs Stand Up Nearly Perpendicular.
The folksinger Tom Paxton (naturally) felt sorry for Pluto's plight:
"You'll always be a planet to me, Pluto,
No matter what the smart alecs say.
Our old solar system was doing just fine,
With wonderful planets - their number was nine.
Now, all these smart astronomers with too much time,
They just couldn't let things be.
They tell me that you're nothing but a dwarf, Pluto,
But you'll always be a planet-
Kryptonite or granite-
You'll always be a planet to me!"
