Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What substance did the ancient Greeks name "elektron"?

Answer: amber

Amber is crystalized tree resin, best known for encasing ancient insects. The Greeks called it "elektron" because it was a conductor of static electrical charges; in fact, that's how we got "electron" and "electricity".
2. What is the name of Barbara Bain's character on "Mission Impossible"?

Answer: Cinnamon

Barbara Bain was Cinnamon Carter, one of the secret crime-fighting force that included Greg Morris and Peter Graves as Jim Phelps, the agent best known for getting all those self-destructing messages! She was married for a time to Martin Landau, whom she also co-starred in "Space:1999".
3. Who was the rich villianess in the old "Steve Canyon" comic strip?

Answer: Copper Calhoun

OK, that last one was really stretching it! Milton Caniff already gave us the Dragon Lady in his original "Terry and the Pirates", now he created Copper Calhoun, a spoiled millionaress with her eye on Steve.
4. T or F: Redd Foxx's real last name was the same as the title character he played.

Answer: True

BION, Fred Sanford of "Sanford and Son" was played by...John Elroy Sanford! You know him as Redd Foxx, of course.
5. Name the color here that belongs in the spectrum.

Answer: Indigo

Remember the mnemonic ROY G. BIV? I is for Indigo. Mauve, brown and sepia are not visible in the spectrum, as is indigo.
6. What flower gets its name from the Latin for "wash"?

Answer: Lavender

Lavender was once used a bath perfume in ancient times, hence the name.
7. From the popular camp 60's TV version of "Batman", one of the Riddler's riddles: When is a car considered seedy? When it's a...

Answer: lemon

The riddle appeared in an episode concerning silent movies; it pointed to a lemonade party given by a silent film collector (played by silent star Francis X. Bushman) struck by Riddler. Frank Gorshin is my favorite villian on "Batman", now on the TV Land cable channel. Gorshin even gave a superb Chaplin impersonation at the beginning!
8. From what metal does Argentina get its name?

Answer: silver

Argentina shares its root with the chemical symbol for silver, Ag, from the Latin Argentum.
9. What is the birthstone for December?

Answer: Turquoise

The best known source of turquoise is the Southwest U.S. desert, where Indian tribes fashion beautiful jewelry from it. Garnet is my birthstone, its name from pomegranate, the fruit that doomed Persephone to six months every year in Hades.
10. What is the link here? (The answer is a specific one)

Answer: John D.MacDonald novels

All the answers refer to colors in the titles of John D. MacDonald's popular Travis McGee series (they're also mentioned in the books themselves). They are: "Darker Than AMBER", "CINNAMON Skin", "The Empty COPPER Sea", The Quick RED Fox", "Dress Her In INDIGO", "The Long LAVENDER Look", "The Dreadful LEMON Sky", "The Lonely SILVER Rain"(the last McGee book), and "The TURQUOISE Lament".
