A dirge is a somber song that expresses grief or mourning, appropriate to be performed in a memorial service, a funeral. The meaning given to the word "dirge" is unrelated to its Latin origin. It came from the first word of a Latin chant used in funeral ceremonies that reads "Dirige, Domine, Deus meus, in conspectu tuo viam meam." (Direct, O Lord my God, my way in thy sight).

The word "dirge" came to be used as a synonym for solemn or funeral songs.
