Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many wings are on the field at the beginning of a soccer match? (Assuming the birds have all flown away!)

Answer: Four

Soccer (called football in Britain and elsewhere) is played by two teams. The players who are in the positions nearest to the sidelines are known as "wings" or "wingers". Each team has two wings, and since there are two teams in a game, there are four at the start. This can be reduced by injury or fouls.
2. Which of these has four wings?

Answer: A cabbage white

A cabbage white is a butterfly. A butterfly is an insect, and insects usually have four wings (although in some species two of the wings have become wing cases or have almost disappeared through evolution).

Purple sprouting broccoli is a delicious vegetable of the cabbage family. A redstart is a bird with two wings. Yellow jaundice is a disease.
3. In Greek mythology, a harpy has wings and other monstrous attributes. Which of these does a harpy NOT have?

Answer: Beauty

Harpies, being creatures of mythology, were not always depicted in the same way. Usually they had the head of a woman and the body of a bird, but they were always described as filthy and unkempt. They were associated with sudden gusts of wind, and were often blamed for the disappearances of people and things.

They were supposedly sent by Zeus, the chief of the Gods, to punish a king who had annoyed him. Whenever a plate of food was set before this king, the harpies would whisk it away and foul any crumbs that were left behind.
4. Which of these creatures has wings?

Answer: A flying fox

A flying fox is a large bat that feeds upon fruit. It has leathery wings stretched between its fingers, and flies effortlessly from tree to tree.

A flying squirrel has a flap of skin between its front and back legs which it uses to glide. A flying fish has large fins which it uses to glide when it rises above water, and on occasion even manages to use them in a flying motion for a short distance. A feathered serpent is a creature of Aztec myth.
5. A workman's toolbox may contain a winged version of which of these?

Answer: Nut

A wing nut has projections called wings. These can be pressed to exert extra pressure, which aids in tightening it further.
6. Which of these trees sets wings on its seeds to carry them away?

Answer: Ash

An ash produces seeds with tight wings. These fall from the tree and spin in the wind, which carries the seeds further than a simple fall would do. These seeds are called "ash keys".
7. In Greek mythology, Pegasus had wings. What kind of creature was Pegasus?

Answer: A horse

Pegasus was a twin, born of the blood of the gorgon Medusa. His twin is little known but may have been a giant. It is possible that they were born on Mt Helicon, which was growing bigger. Pegasus is said to have kicked it to stop it from growing any further.

Greek hero Bellerophon is said to have caught Pegasus, and he tried to ride Pegasus to Mount Olympus to be with the gods. But Zeus was annoyed, so he sent an insect to sting Pegasus, who reared up in pain and caused Bellerophon to fall to Earth, where he broke his neck and died.
8. Who wrote the music for "On Wings of Song"?

Answer: Mendelssohn

The poem was written by the romantic German poet Heinrich Heine. Mendelssohn set it to music. The result was a beautiful poem set to a lovely melody that, in addition to its more formal performances, is often sung by school choirs and many other groups and soloists.
9. Which creatures from British mythology changed in popular perception during the twentieth century from dangerous, unpredictable creatures to pretty little women with glittery wings?

Answer: Fairies

Fairies were once highly feared creatures who, amongst other things, would come out on nights such as Midsummer Eve and find housemaids and housewives who had not done their work properly. The fairies would pinch them black and blue for their laziness.

Other stories tell of them punishing liars and tricking greedy people. They were dangerous characters to have around, and wise people would seal their doors and windows with cold iron, rowan branches or hawthorn berries to keep the fairies away.
10. Which type of aircraft has no wings?

Answer: Helicopter

Helicopters usually have a rotor with four twisted blades. When they begin to whirl, the blades create a wind which provides a lift to raise them above ground. All the others rely on wings, especially fixed wings, that do not move separately from the craft.
