Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The area where a certain species can be found

Answer: Range

An animal's range is the land area in which it can be found. Some animals have a very short range and have trouble surviving outside of that area while others have rather large ranges and may be able to adapt elsewhere.
2. Danger

Answer: Hatari

Hatari is a Swahili word that means danger. Some of the animal life in the savannah, such as lions and hippos, are potentially dangerous to humans and should be observed from a far. It is not unusual to see signs with the word "hatari" printed on them in certain areas where dangers animals are known to live.

In addition, certain landscapes are also dangerous such as steep cliffs and rocky terrain.
3. A dung heap

Answer: Midden

A midden is a pile of animal manure that has accumulated into mounds in some areas. It is essentially an animal bathroom. Some middens can be quite large. Ones for rhinos can be up to three meters wide.

Middens are also accumulations of animal bones, rocks, shells and other materials that have formed similar mounds.
4. A lion or lioness

Answer: Simba

Lions and lionesses are some of the most sought after and popular animals safari goers hope to see. The Swahili word for the animal is "simba", a word made famous by "The Lion King".
5. A rocky outcropping in a savannah

Answer: Kopje

A kopje is a rocky hill like structure that is commonly seen in plateaus, plains and savannah lands. Kopjes are great places to find big cats such as lions while on a safari. Lions like to look over the flatlands from the kopje while searching for prey.
6. A safari guide who seeks out animals away from the group

Answer: Tracker

A tracker is a safari guide who breaks away from the main group of safari goers to seek out which areas have abundant animal life. The tracker will then inform the guide who will bring the safari goers to that area to observe the wildlife. A tracker may also (controversially) lure animals into certain areas that are more easily accessible to the group.
7. A rented hut where safari goers spend the nights in the wilderness

Answer: Banda

Literally speaking a banda is simply a small house with a thatched roof. On safari, a banda is basically small hut where safari travelers spend the night. Typically, bandas are small and simple though they may sometimes be large and elaborate for more extravagant guests.
8. The illegal hunting of animals for profit

Answer: Poaching

Poaching is a very series issue in Africa. Poachers like to hunt rare and exotic animals for their fur, tusks or for trophies. In many places, it is illegal to hunt certain animals without a permit and several African governments have taken extreme steps to stop poaching. Many of the animals that are poached are endangered species or enjoy other protected status.
9. An area of marshland

Answer: Vlei

Vleis are a somewhat common landform in safari areas. Typically, a vlei is a shallow marshy area that appears only in the wet season. Frogs, other amphibians and reptiles are commonly found there. In dry seasons, vleis may totally dry up and leave behind a barren, dry area.
10. An elephant

Answer: Tembo

Tembo is the Swahili word for elephant, another animal that is popular with safari goers. Elephants are one of the most illegally hunted animals in the safari. Poachers value an elephant's tusks and sell them on the black market for large amounts of money. Many countries have elephant sanctuaries that offer their own safari for tourists who want that experience.
