Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many universal touch-tone buttons are there on a standard touch-tone telephone?

Answer: 12

The standardized touch-tone has 12 push buttons, including the numbers one through nine with a zero at the end, straddled by a 'star' and 'pound sign' key. Not all touch-tone phones have redial, hold, speaker, and other buttons installed. Even if you thought that those were standard, then the best answer would have been 12.
2. If you edicted to someone, what did you do?

Answer: Uttered or proclaimed

To edict, according to Webster's Dictionary, is to utter or proclaim, as a Prince might do to his subjects while stating a new law.
3. Three members of Eric Clapton's crew were killed in a helicopter crash in August 1990.

Answer: True

Any death is tragic, but this was a more than a tragic aircraft accident that not only killed three members of Eric Clapton's crew, but also killed the great guitarist, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Five people were killed in a helicopter accident on August 27, 1990, near East Troy, Wisconsin. The three Clapton crew were: agent Bobby Brooks, bodyguard Nigel Browne and tour manager Colin Smythe.
4. Who were the first grandfather-grandson combination to both be President of the United States?

Answer: William/Benjamin Harrison

George H. and George W. were father-son, as were the Adamses. The Johnsons listed were not related. William Henry Harrison was the ninth President, and served less than a month in office in 1841 before he died from a respiratory condition. William had nine children.

But it was his grandson, Benjamin, who continued on the family tradition, by being elected to the Presidency from 1889-1893. While his grandfather entered and died in office at the age of 68, Benjamin joined the ranks at the age of 55, then died at age 67 in 1901.
5. Which U.S. automotive company came out with the first 389 cubic inch 'high performance' engine?

Answer: Pontiac

The 389 C.I. V-8 was a reborn and bored 326 cubic inch engine, another Pontiac credit, and was first introduced during the muscle car era of the mid and late 1960s in the General Motors Pontiac GTO. This engine came with either a four-barrel carburetor or a tri-power intake, which had three two-barrel carburetors.

The muscle car era of the 1960s also heavily advertised 'ram air', a technological term. However, all this meant was that in most cases, there was a hole in the hood to bring more air into the intake manifold through the carburetor.
6. The medication Methoprene is taken for which of the following?

Answer: A flea and tick condition

Dogs are the primary user of Methoprene, which is a lightly colored amber liquid to control the growth of insects, mainly ticks and fleas. It has a very slight odor which is offensive to insects, therefore repels them in time.
7. On an aircraft, what is the primary function of a torque/torsion link?

Answer: To keep the landing gear from falling apart

The torque or torsion links, referred to by both names, is connected from the inner landing gear cylinder to the outer landing gear cylinder. This keeps the shock strut on the landing gear from falling off the aircraft on take-off, and also keeps those landing gear wheels centered.
8. What is the white color in an RCA video/audio jack component systems used for?

Answer: Left Audio

RCA jack plugs have a worldwide standard. The left audio plug is colored white, the red plug is for right audio, while the yellow plug is for video use. While the color is mandated for specific use, these can also be used for 'patch cords' which mean nothing except using them for connection purposes.

The RCA cord produces a much better quality than the standard coaxial cable, but is slightly inferior to the 'super video' cable which has four wires, of which an additional wire is used for video feeds.
9. What is a transformer-rectifier?

Answer: A unit which converts AC electricity into DC electricity

A transformer-rectifier takes a high voltage of Alternating Current electricity and converts it to Direct Current electricity, while stepping down the voltage. AC electricity carries more 'umph' behind it, therefore keeping strong even in low demand issues. Most cars made after 1965 have alternators in them for the charging systems.

These alternators produce AC electricity, but before leaving the unit itself, rectifies it from AC to DC electricity. Automobiles have a DC electrical system, but it is all supported by AC electricity.
10. If you have ever seen a firefighter dousing a fire with a hose connected to a U.S. street corner fire hydrant, then you've seen a tremendous stream of water coming out of the hose with great force. What is the closest pounds per square inch (PSI) of these fire hydrants that blast the water out?

Answer: 25-40 psi

The average city residential district has hydrants rated at 35 psi. It is hard to imagine, but when considering that this source is low pressure / high volume, then it might help understand the issues. The size of pipe for fire hydrants is extremely larger than a household water supply, this feeding a much larger supply of water at high volume to a fire hose.

The pressure is the same however for a standard shower or kitchen sink, with smaller pipes.
