Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. _______are over 500 types of cheese in France. No wonder the French can't make up _____minds!

Answer: There, their

This seems to be an error that plagues a lot of people and happens to the best of us when typing fast, but in a quiz and in everyday life it needs to be nipped in the bud.
2. _______a shame that __________moving away. Our kids play with _____kids so well!

Answer: It's, they're, their

The it's vs. its is another problem that doesn't seem to quit at Quizzyland and elsewhere in the world, however, when typing up a quiz, make sure you've got it straight. The company lost its status. (possessive). It's too bad the employees lost their status.

It is = contraction. I know it sounds easy, but as a spellchecker won't get it, both exist in English, you'll want to check it.
3. Mary McMurdy is the author _____cat Squiggles inspired a popular detective series. She's the one ____living in a cottage in the Scottish Highlands.

Answer: whose, who's

This one is particularly hard to uproot, yet you can do it. Take the opportunity of quiz creating to get rid of this unsightly error. Just proofread more carefully and think, "Oops, I meant the other one". Not all word processors will get it when you're typing if both words exist.
4. ______shoes are in the living room?! ______all covered with mud!

Answer: Whose, They're

This one is also prevalent. Just takes the mental trick to correct it. If it's any consolation, it happens to many people. It's just a confusion in English between contraction and possessive.
5. _____that knocking on the door? _____feet are those sticking out of my chimney?

Answer: Who's, Whose

Now that one is a little trickier to our eyes, I'll admit. Who is that knocking on the door? Whose feet...when you proofread be careful to think, "Wait now, it's not 'who is' feet...oops!"
6. Hey,_____2 o'clock in the morning! How come _____calling me at this time of the night?

Answer: it's, you're

These are fairly common mistakes that the editing staff as well as most English teachers see many times per day. Contractions of speech tend to give writers some trouble.
7. ____spending _____honeymoon on Maui.

Answer: They're, their

English is a bit frustrating sometimes, isn't it? Well, with three variations for the same sound, it is perhaps normal that this error trips up more than a few. At my advanced age, I still occasionally do the their, there, but a little light goes on in my mind and I backspace. Try to cultivate the little beep.
8. ______desk is a mess. You should watch what _____doing.

Answer: Your, you're

Contractions are such an important part of English, yet they aren't always as easy as you think. Second language learners sometimes manage better than native English speakers, whereas native speakers take it for granted. Some formal writing however, requires you spell out your contractions, therefore you won't make this mistake.
9. ______barking all night lately. ______the matter with him?

Answer: Your dog's been, What's

Your dog has been = Your dog's been barking. Contracting spoken English does make things get a bit harder to write it out properly.
10. My cat is the one ______on the fence. _____cat is in the tree.

Answer: who's, Their

I suppose it's time to call the firefighters for their cat. Or just let him get down.
