On Saturday 23 January at about 3:15 am a small but noisy procession wound its way from the East End Market towards the Victoria Square environs. To the lively strains of the Concordia Band eight carts laden with produce were driven by market gardeners to a site between Gouger and Grote Streets.

In only a few hours about 500 purchasers quickly bought out the entire stock of goods for sale, so that for those hurrying to the scene of activity after 6:00 am, there was nothing left to buy. So began the first day of the Adelaide Central Market (then called City Market) back in 1869 in Grote Street on a site without any structure other then a fence and a couple of gas lights.
