Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In England, government business is conducted in the Houses of Parliament, but in which chamber of the building do Members of Parliament meet to conduct daily business?

Answer: House of Commons

Properly known as the Palace of Westminster, the Houses of Parliament stand on the north bank of the River Thames. The modern building dates back to the 19th century. However, there are older parts that have survived fires and the ravages of time, such as Westminster Hall, which is attached to the western end of the main building and is used for ceremonial occasions.

The late Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, lay in state therein after her death in 2002.
2. The Tower of London has been used for many purposes in its history. These include use as a Royal Residence, a fortress and a jail. It is also home to which breed of bird that wanders around the confines of the Tower?

Answer: Raven

Ravens have been living within the Tower of London walls for centuries. Legend has it that if the ravens ever left, the monarchy and the kingdom would fall! The birds have their wings clipped to prevent this from happening. In 2009, there were ten ravens in residence at the Tower, all of which were known by name to the Yeoman Warders (Beefeaters).
3. Trafalgar Square in the heart of London has a columnar monument at its center, with a statue of which national hero on top of the stone column?

Answer: Horatio Nelson

Nelson's column was erected between 1840-1843 to commemorate his victory in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. The granite column stands 151 feet high, with the statue of Nelson himself adding a further 18 feet. The statue of Nelson faces the Admiralty building across the square, which is the headquarters of the Royal Navy. Admiral Lord Nelson was killed by a French marksman during the Battle of Trafalgar, and his body was brought home preserved in a barrel of brandy, before eventually being interred in St. Paul's Cathedral.
4. Standing at the western end of the Mall, Buckingham Palace became the official residence of the reigning British monarch in 1837. Who was the first monarch to take up residence there?

Answer: Queen Victoria

Queen Victoria, who reigned for a period of 63 years and seven months, succeeded to the throne upon the death of her uncle, William IV, who died from heart failure. By the time she died, she had been the longest reigning monarch in British history.

It was from Buckingham Palace that Queen Elizabeth II made her famous broadcast to the world on 9 September 1997, following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales.
5. Wembley Stadium is the traditional home of England's football team, as well as being the venue for the FA Cup final. It is also used as a concert arena, hosting many top name events. The original stadium closed in 2000, and a magnificent new one opened in 2007. Which football team was the last to win the FA Cup at the old stadium, and also the first to win it at the new stadium?

Answer: Chelsea

West London team Chelsea beat Aston Villa by 1-0 in the Cup Final in 2000, and beat Manchester United by the same margin in 2007. A statue of the late Sir Bobby Moore, captain of the England team when they won the World Cup in 1966, was erected outside Wembley.

Wembley Stadium is a fully seated venue, with a capacity of 90,000, and boasts 2,618 toilets (that's one toilet for every 34.3 people). This set a world record for a single building upon its opening.
6. One of the easiest ways to get around London is by using the underground railway system. By what nickname is the underground railway system popularly known?

Answer: The Tube

The London Underground railway system, or the Tube, is the oldest system of its type in the world, with construction having begun in 1863. As well as serving all of London, its network extends into the bordering counties of Essex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. There are at least 270 stations served by the Tube network.
7. Shattering all previous theatrical records, which play by Agatha Christie, performed in London's West End, entered its 57th year of production in 2009?

Answer: The Mousetrap

"The Mousetrap" originally started out as a play written for radio called "Three Blind Mice". It was first performed on stage at the Theatre Royal in Nottingham on 16 October 1952. It was transferred to London's West End and opened in the New Ambassador Theatre on 25 November 1952, where it stayed until 1974 when it moved to the St. Martin's Theatre right next door.

It has had over 23,000 performances at St. Martin's! Interestingly, the only stage prop that survived from the first performance was the mantle clock seen in the hallway in the play.
8. Which park is home to the world famous London Zoo?

Answer: Regents Park

First opened for purposes of scientific research in 1828, thus supporting its claim to be the oldest zoo in the world, it opened its doors to the general public in 1847. Privately financed through gate admission fees and charitable donations, London Zoo is operated by the Zoological Society of London, founded by Sir Stamford Raffles in 1826. Raffles was also known as the founder of Singapore.
9. Which star of silent films was immortalised with a statue in Leicester Square?

Answer: Charlie Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin (Charles Spencer Chaplin) was born in Walworth in London on 16 April 1889. Both his parents worked as performers in the theatre, so it was no surprise that he followed suit. His success was legendary, and he received the honour of the KBE (Knight Commander of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth II in the News Year's Honours in 1975. Married four times, Charlie Chaplin died at his home in Switzerland on 25 December 1977, aged 88.

A statue of Charlie Chaplin resided in Leicester Square for over thirty years but was moved to nearby Leicester Place after refurbishment of the square.
10. Many of the sights in London are well-known worldwide, but if you wanted to walk across the original (1831) London Bridge, where would you need to travel to?

Answer: The USA

As London's traffic continued to increase during the 1960s, the bridge was not thought to be strong enough to carry the weight of the increasing number of vehicles passing over it daily. It was therefore put up for sale, and was bought by American Robert McCulloch, Chairman of an oil corporation.

After being carefully dismantled piece by piece, it was transported to Lake Havasu in Arizona, where reconstruction work began in 1968. It finally opened in Lake Havasu as a tourist attraction in 1971.
