Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Size doesn't matter: The island of Ireland has 32 counties. Which of these is the smallest in terms of area?

Answer: Louth

Louth, on the east coast, has an area of just 820 kmē.

The next smallest is County Carlow, which is 896 kmē in area.
2. Northern lights: Which of these is the most northerly point on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Malin Head

To be perfectly pedantic, Ireland's most northerly point is Inishtrahull Island, in the Atlantic Ocean, 7km north of Inishowen Peninsula, County Donegal.

However, the question asked for the most northerly point ON the island, so that is Banba's Crown, Malin Head, County Donegal.
3. Dead centre: In which county would you find the geographic centre of the island of Ireland?

Answer: Roscommon

That central point is three km (two miles) south of Athlone town.

Of course you knew that the wrong answers are all on the coast.
4. Climb every mountain: Where would you find the highest point on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Mount Carrauntoohil

Mt Carrantuohill, County Kerry, rises to 1,041 metres (3,414 feet) above sea level.

It 'towers' above the second highest point, Mt Beenkeragh, also in County Kerry, by a mere 31m, 100feet.
5. River, she runs by: Which of these is the longest river on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Shannon

In fact the Shannon is the longest river in the British Isles.

It rises at Shannon Pot, County Cavan, and flows to the sea between counties Clare and Limerick 386 km (240 miles) later.
6. Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy: If you want to see the sun on your holiday in Ireland, where should you go?

Answer: Rosslare

Rosslare, in County Wexford, has more than 1,600 hours of sunshine per year (four hrs, 20 mins per day).
7. Rained again last night: Where would you find the wettest place on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Maumturk and Partry Mountains

The Maumturk and Partry mountains of counties Mayo and Galway receive over 2,400mm (c94.5 inches) of rain annually.
8. Who needs an umbrella? Where is driest place on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Dublin

Dublin is the largest city on the island and is the capital of the Republic of Ireland.

It receives less than 800mm(c31.5inches) of rain per year.
9. The water is wide: Which of these is the largest lake on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Lough Neagh

It is also the largest freshwater lake in the British Isles.

Lough Neagh is important for its eel fisheries and as a source of drinking water for many places. Less environmentally friendly is the dredging of its bed for sand for the construction industry.

It has an area of 151 square miles, (392 kmē).
10. Far from the madding crowd: Which is the most sparsely populated county on the island of Ireland?

Answer: Leitrim

Leitrim had a mere 15.8 inhabitants per square kilometre at the 2016 Census.

It is probably no coincidence that Leitrim is also the county with the lowest population, just 25,032 inhabitants.
