Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which Arizona city did the 'Shootout at the OK Corral' take place? Virgil Earp was murdered there, and it is home to the Bird Cage Theatre and an infamous cemetery named Boot Hill.

Answer: Tombstone

Tombstone is located in southeastern Arizona. Founded as a mining town, it was once the home of Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and Big Nose Kate. Although the mines have closed, it has become a popular tourist destination, as its history epitomizes the 'Wild West'. Here, you can tour the Birdcage Theatre, and western gunfights are simulated daily on its main street.
2. Everyone knows of the Grand Canyon, but do you know the name of the small 'village' - comprised of stone cabins, bunkhouses and a food hall - located at the canyon's bottom? Teddy Roosevelt once camped here on a hunting trip in 1913.

Answer: Phantom Ranch

When hiking into the Grand Canyon, many people decide to spend the night at Phantom Ranch, located on the north side of the Colorado River. There are only three ways you can get to Phantom Ranch: hike in, ride a mule or come down the Colorado River. It is one of a few places in the United States where the US mail is still delivered by mules. Living in Arizona for over 30 years, I have stayed at Phantom Ranch several times in the past.

Although the canyon's grandeur is immense, thinking about those switchbacks on the long, long way to the top, I realize I'll probably never do it again.

But there are memories of those excursions that I still cherish.
3. This city is famous for its old territorial prison. A major motion picture, released in 2007 and starring Russell Crowe, had this city's name in its title. Situated on Interstate Highway 8, it is approximately 170 miles from San Diego, California. Name the city.

Answer: Yuma

Yuma's High School nickname is the 'Criminals'. At first a pejorative name given by its rivals in Phoenix, the school officially adopted the nickname in 1917. The Russell Crowe film was named '3:10 to Yuma'.

Yuma is also very close to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, where people from California and Arizona bring their dune buggies, sand rails or other off-road vehicles to enjoy a good time.
4. This city was the location for the filming of a major motion picture (a 1985 romantic comedy) starring Sally Field and James Garner. The city's economy is primarily tied to the state's prison system, with Arizona's largest prison complex located nearby. Pick the city.

Answer: Florence

Florence's preserved Main Street and open desert scenery was the setting for the movie 'Murphy's Romance'. Florence hosts a total of nine prisons from the county, state, federal and private prisons. Florence is also home to the annual 'Country Thunder' music festival.
5. Known as Hayden's Ferry in territorial times, which city is home to the Arizona State University Sun Devils? It has also become the corporate home of U.S. Airways, as a result of the America West Airline merger in 2005.

Answer: Tempe

In earlier times, the Salt River was often impassable, so Charles Hayden created a ferry service to help wagon traffic cross the river. There was once enough water flowing in the Salt River that a flour mill was located on its southern bank. In fact, one of Tempe's primary streets is named Mill Avenue.
6. Once notorious as a 'wild west' town and a hotbed of prostitution, gambling and vice, this former mining town eventually went bust and was almost deserted. It has become a popular artist and tourist destination, with a large mining museum, many bed and breakfasts and over 25 art galleries and studios. Which town is it?

Answer: Jerome

In 1903, the New York 'Sun' newspaper proclaimed Jerome as "the wickedest town in the west". In the 1950s, Jerome practically became a ghost town, reduced to only around 50 people. It has a history in the labor movement, with many early miners belonging to the IWW (Wobblies). Jerome is named after an investor from New York who never visited his namesake.
7. Close to the San Francisco Peaks and the Snowbowl ski area, what city is home to the Lowell Observatory and Northern Arizona University? The city is located at an elevation of 6,910 ft (2,106 m) and was once a major stop on Route 66.

Answer: Flagstaff

The Lowell Observatory is where Pluto, the formerly designated ninth planet, was discovered in 1930. Flagstaff is also home to the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks. Since it is located next to North America's largest contiguous Ponderosa pine forest, forestry is a major industry here.
8. Famous for its resorts, golf courses and being the home of the Tournament Players Club Champions course, what town is also known for its nightlife, art galleries and expensive homes? Tourism is this city's primary industry.

Answer: Scottsdale

More expensive to live in than most of its neighbors, Scottsdale is home to many expensive golf and vacation resorts, such as the Orange Tree, the Phoenician, Troon North and the Boulders. With over 200 courses, it was once called "America's best place to live for golf".
9. Home to the NFL Arizona Cardinals' football stadium, as well as the NHL Phoenix Coyotes arena, what city had over 200,000 residents in 2012? It borders its larger neighbor, Phoenix.

Answer: Glendale

Glendale bills itself as 'Arizona's Antique Capital'. It is also home to the popular Arrowhead Towne Center.
10. This city is surrounded by stunning red sandstone formations. Here, you can take Red Rock Jeep Tours, and with Oak Creek Canyon and Slide Rock nearby, it is very popular with tourists. Name it.

Answer: Sedona

Besides its beautiful surrounding scenery, Sedona is also known as a spiritual and psychic center. It hosts a 'psychic fair' every year. In Sedona, you can get everything from psychic vortex energy tours to past life regression sessions.

Over 60 Hollywood films have been made in this area.
