Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Getha will be travelling to Arnhem by train. Which one of the train stations mentioned is NOT in Arnhem?

Answer: Amstel

The train station Amstel is located in Amsterdam, as is the river of the same name. The city of Arnhem has four main train stations, the largest one being Arnhem Central Station. The smaller ones are called Zuid, Presikhaaf and Velperpoort. "Zuid" is the Dutch word for "South", so it is not hard to figure out where in Arnhem it is located. Velperpoort and Presikhaaf are located in the eastern part of the city.
2. As a taxi takes Getha to her hotel in the city, she notices a large river in the city. Which river would this be?

Answer: Rhine

Arnhem is on the Rhine river. Near Arnhem there is also a branch of the Rhine River, the IJssel River. As a result of being located near a river, Arnhem has several bridges. These include the John Frost Bridge and the Nelson Mandela Bridge. In the Second World War Operation Market Garden allowed Allied forces to break through German lines and take control of several Dutch bridges.

The John Frost Bridge (named after commander John Frost after the war) was one of them. The events of this operation are featured in the movie "A Bridge Too Far".

Answer: Nijmegen

The friendly guy goes on to explain that Arnhem is the capital of the province of Gelderland. It is the largest province of the Netherlands, located in the eastern and central part of the Netherlands. Other notable cities in this province include Nijmegen, Apeldoorn and Zutphen. Arnhem houses the government building on the provincial level.

This is where the King's Commissioner, the head of the province has his (or her) offices. It is also where the Provincial Council and the Provincial Executive are located. Nijmegen is located close to Arnhem (approximately 14 kilometres apart).

They often work together on regional projects. The fans of their soccer teams (Vitesse and NEC respectively) mostly do not get along though.
4. One of the bridges near Arnhem is named after a Russian physicist and Nobel Prize winner. What is the name of the bridge?

Answer: Andrej Sacharov Bridge

One of the bridges in Arnhem spanning the Rhine River is named after Russian physicist and Nobel Prize winner Andrej Sacharov. Many of the bridges in Arnhem are named after freedom fighters, like Nelson Mandela or John Frost. Originally the name of the bridge was Koningspleij Bridge.

Answer: GelreDome

The GelreDome is a large stadium, the home of the football club of Arnhem, Vitesse. It is also used as a venue for large concerts and events. The stadium was opened in 1998. It replaced the previous stadium location for Vitesse, Nieuw-Monnikenhuize. The plans were mainly created by the president of Vitesse at the time, Karel Aalbers.

It is a very modern stadium, which has a retractable roof. It also hosts international football matches, including the group matches of the European Championships in 2000.

Some of his relics are kept in the church.
10. What Getha does not know, is that you can even find landmarks underground in Arnhem. What will she discover when she does make the special tour?

Answer: Historic basements

Under the city of Arnhem are 36 historic basements. Many of them date back to the 14th century, when trade flourished in Arnhem. In 2001 they were made accessible for the public and connected with each other. At several points during the tour you can literally look up to the streets above, seeing the shopping crowd walk by. You can walk through the basements with a guide or even rent out part of the space for a special event.
