Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the highway you'd take if you wanted to drive to Indianapolis, Indiana, from Columbus as quickly as possible?

Answer: Interstate 70

Built to replace the original National Road (US Route 40), Interstate 70 was constructed beginning in the late 1950s as a major east-west route between West Virginia and Indiana, extending about 360 miles. It was opened in stages until about 1970, and is still upgraded through the addition of beltways and bypasses to reflect the development of communities along its route.
2. You probably know that The Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the USA, is located in Columbus. However, do you know the name of the football (yeah, football - you wanna make somethin' of it?) stadium at Ohio State?

Answer: Ohio Stadium

Ohio Stadium was constructed in 1922 and has been upgraded, revised, and remodeled a number of times since then, increasing its capacity from 66,000 to 105,000 in the process. Most famous as the home venue for the football teams of The Ohio State University, the stadium has also welcomed NFL football games, MLS soccer games, and major track meets, to name but a few of the sporting events it has hosted. Additionally, the stadium has served as a home for the offices of researchers, a summer theater, and as a dormitory for scholarship students from 1933 until the 1990s.
3. What is the longer of the two north-south waterways that have their confluence in Columbus, Ohio?

Answer: Scioto River

The Scioto River rises in northwest Ohio and flows southward until it meets the Ohio river at Portsmouth. Many native civilizations developed along the Scioto during its history (the name "Scioto" derives from a Wyandot word for "deer"); and it was an escape pathway for slaves from the South prior to the Civil War.

Not in use for major river transport any more, the Scioto is used today for recreation and as a source of water for agriculture and drinking.
4. How would a Columbus native describe the topography of the city to you?

Answer: flat

The highest point in the Columbus area is about 1100 feet above sea level, and the lowest is about 650 feet. Given this relatively slight variation in elevation, it's not surprising that the general description of the area's topography is "flat"! One result of such a landscape is that one can see weather coming from a great distance.
5. On the average, what is the wettest month of the year in Columbus (ie, the month with the greatest total of both rain AND snow)?

Answer: July

Columbus has a humid climate, either continental or subtropical, which features hot, wet summers and cold, drier winters. Springs and falls are both mild and wet. The driest month of the year is February, while the months of September and January have relatively the same amounts of precipitation.

The city gets about 28 total inches of snow during a snow season, which runs from late November to late March.
6. Which one of the distinctive neighborhoods in Columbus is the largest privately funded historic district on the National Register of Historic Places?

Answer: German Village

Located just south of downtown Columbus, German Village was settled beginning in the mid 1800s by a large influx of German immigrants. The area experienced fluctuations in settlement over the succeeding century, influenced by anti-German sentiment in WWI and, later, by the growth of a strong civic association.

The neighborhood is considered trendy today, with lovely homes, apartments, and lofts; a variety of dining options; and attractive shops. The Village was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 30, 1974.
7. Suppose you wanted to head out to a Browns game in Cleveland, Ohio. What highway would be your fastest route to get there?

Answer: Interstate 71

Interstate 71 runs northeast from near Louisville, Kentucky, to Cleveland, a distance of roughly 340 miles. Construction began in 1961 and concluded in 1969, replacing several state highways along the way. The highway was revised and repaired between 1999 and 2015.
8. Much of the landscape of Columbus was formed by a glacier that covered the area during which geological era?

Answer: Wisconsin Ice Age

The Wisconsin Ice Age began 85,000 years ago and extended until about 11,000 years ago, fundamentally changing the geography of the lands north of the Ohio River. The Great Lakes also began to be formed towards the end of this period.
9. On the average, what is the coldest month of the year in Columbus?

Answer: January

The coldest temperature recorded in Columbus was -22 degrees F in January, 1994; the highest was 106 degrees F in July, 1934. Columbus can be subject to severe weather in the spring and summer. Large thunderstorms are common, and tornado warnings are not unheard of.
10. The major international airport in the Columbus area was re-named after which legendary Ohio native?

Answer: Astronaut John Glenn

Formerly known as Port Columbus International Airport, the main airport serving the Columbus area was renamed John Glenn Columbus International Airport in 2016 to honor the astronaut and Ohio native. Opened in 1929 on a site selected by Charles Lindbergh, the airport has been renovated a number of times over the years, most recently in 2013.

It is the second-busiest airport in the state of Ohio, after Hopkins International in Cleveland.
