Rome's main international airport was named after Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), who was known for his contributions to aviation during the Renaissance Era, in addition to his accomplishments as an artist. The airport was opened in 1961 and has served as the main hub for Alitalia, the national airline of Italy.
