The lights are always switched on on a Friday and on a Sunday 66 nights later they shine for the last time that year.
2. In what year did the illuminations shine for the first time?

Answer: 1879

In the first year the display consisted of just eight arc lamps! So innovative was this first year that it preceded Edison's patent for the electric light bulb by 12 months!
3. During those early years the lights would often go out, but why?

Answer: Sea water leaked into the wiring

The cast iron pipes holding the wiring were on the sea front, when the tide came in sea water got into the pipes.

Answer: First and Second World Wars

Because of restrictions on fuel and glass during World War I and World War II and for some years after World War II the illuminations didn't shine.

Blackpool trams have been running for over 100 years and the whole network runs for 12 miles.

Answer: 519 feet

It's not possible to go all the way to the top of the tower but there is an enclosed viewing platform at 380 feet which has great views of the illuminations.
