Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a very cold country in Asia. My capital is known to have the coldest average temperature of any national capital in the world. In the winter you may find vendors on my streets selling ice cream in just paper boxes. A man-made freezer is not needed in my chilly climate. What country could I be?

Answer: Mongolia

Mongolia's capital, Ulaanbaatar, has an average annual temperature of -1.3°C. It experiences long, cold winters and short summers. The country of Mongolia has been known to endure extreme snowy winters known as zuds. This prevents livestock from accessing food, and many die due to cold and starvation.

This is a big problem for Mongolian residents, because they rely on the animals for food and for their economy.
2. I am a cold country in the northern hemisphere. My land provides shelter to the largest population of polar bears in the world. I am the second largest country and have two official languages: English and French. Which icy country am I?

Answer: Canada

Canada is home to about 75% of the world's polar bears. Churchill, Manitoba is considered by some to be the polar bear capital of the world. Here, hundreds of polar bears visit the area every fall. As the country is so large, the temperatures and snowfall do vary throughout.

The Prairie Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba) are particularly cold and can reach -40°C at night with a severe wind chill.
3. I am the United States of America. Even though I am not very cold as a whole, one of my states can experience extremely cold weather. A temperature of -62.2°C was recorded here in 1971. What freezing northern state could I be?

Answer: Alaska

Alaska is the largest and northernmost state of the U.S.A. Many may picture Alaska as a barren landscape where it snows nonstop year-round. However, Alaska's landscape includes many lakes, rivers, and greenery. Snowfall also varies greatly throughout the state.

Some areas receive a smaller average of snowfall than areas in the contiguous United States. Others such as Valdez, Alaska receive an average of 320 inches of snow each year.
4. I am a very cold region. Nearly 80% of my surface is covered in glaciers. There are very few people living on me even though I am the largest island that is not a continent. Which frigid area am I?

Answer: Greenland

Greenland is definitely not as "green" as its name implies. The average temperature in the winter is around -9°C, and it only reaches about 7°C in the middle of the summer. Temperatures have been rising over the years, though, due to global warming. This has caused some of the island's glaciers to begin to melt which may have a big impact on the ecology of the area.
5. I am a very large country with freezing, wintry weather. My inhabitants often stay warm by wearing lots of leather and drinking vodka. My coldness has aided in the victory of several key war battles. What chilly Eurasian country could I be?

Answer: Russia

Russian residents find leather clothing fashionable as well as warm. Some women wear full coats made of leather that weigh around twenty-five pounds. The Russian winter has been a huge factor in attacks made by Hitler during WWII and Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812. Many died from sheer cold rather than battle wounds.
6. I am a wintry nation in the eastern hemisphere. Part of me may be referred to as the "Land of the Midnight Sun" because I experience stretches of time when the sun stays up late into the night. I contain the northernmost city in the world and am a part of Scandinavia. What bitter country could I be?

Answer: Norway

Norway also has days without sun (referred to as Polar Days), which are not as drastic as they sound. The area is covered in snow which reflects the light from the twinkling stars above. Hammerfest is considered by some to be the northernmost city of the world.

It experiences 1,500 consecutive hours or nearly 63 days of darkness each year. During the Polar Nights is also an excellent time to observe the phenomenon known as Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).
7. Although I may not be considered a country, I am certainly the coldest, windiest, and driest place on Earth. My land is almost completely covered in ice that averages about a mile in thickness. Which frigid landmass could I be?

Answer: Antarctica

The continent of Antarctica certainly fits this description. Its harsh climate makes it unfit for human population. There are only a few scientists that visit it at research centers throughout the year. Antarctica has the highest average elevation of any continent. It is also considered a desert because it only gets a very small amount of precipitation each year.
8. I am a cool island territory located in the southern hemisphere. My lands are located off the coast of South America. I am home to a large population of penguins. My capital is Stanley. Which chilly land am I?

Answer: Falkland Islands

The Falkland Islands lie in the South Atlantic Ocean near Argentina. They give residence to five different species of penguin. This includes the world's largest concentration of the rockhopper penguin. The average high in the summer is around 13°C and in the winter around 4°C.
9. I am a frosty Scandinavian country. My temperatures get colder and colder the farther north you get. What country could I definitely NOT be?

Answer: Turkey

Norway, Denmark, and Sweden are all considered part of the Scandinavian region. Turkey is a Eurasian country located much farther south than the landmasses included in Scandinavia. Winters in some areas of Turkey can be quite harsh, but summer weather is usually quite pleasant.
10. I am certainly not a tropical island country. In fact, even my name suggests the nature of my climate. My southern region is warmer and wetter than my north. I'm the 18th largest island in the world. Which cold country could I be?

Answer: Iceland

Iceland is actually warmer than most places of similar latitude. This is mainly due to the warm North Atlantic Current that hits the area. The coasts of the island stay ice free even though it is so close to the arctic. Temperature records vary from a record high of 30.5°C in 1939 and a low of −38°C in 1918.
