Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these English cities was NOT the site of a major settlement during the Roman Empire?

Answer: Cambridge

There are some Roman remains in and around Cambridge, but no evidence of a major settlement. The other three answers are the modern names for ancient Roman communities: Carlisle (Luguvalium), Chester (Deva), and Colchester (Camelodunum), the first major Roman settlement.
2. Which of these African cities is NOT the capital of its country?

Answer: Casablanca

Conakry is the capital of Guinea, Cairo of Egypt, and Cape Town is one of the three capitals of South Africa. Casablanca is probably the best-known city in Morocco because of the famous movie starring Humphrey Bogart, but the actual capital is Rabat.
3. Which of these cities is built on an island in the River Lee?

Answer: Cork, Ireland

Canberra was built to be the capital of Australia and is located on man-made Lake Burley Griffin. Cincinnati is found at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking Rivers, while Christchurch is located between two small rivers, the Heathcote and the Avon. None of these is on an island. Cork is the major city in the Irish province of Munster.

Its name comes from the Gaelic "corach" ("marsh") and the city was built between two branches of the River Lee.
4. Which of these cities suffered a major earthquake in February 2011?

Answer: Christchurch, New Zealand

New Zealand is located on the fault line known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, and on average experiences 200 quakes a year that can be felt. In 2010 and 2011, the region around Christchurch in the South Island suffered a number of earthquakes, the most serious of which took place on 22 February 2011. Nearly 200 people were killed, the city centre seriously damaged (including the iconic cathedral), and a great deal of ground liquefaction occurred in the eastern suburbs.
5. Which of these cities is a US state capital?

Answer: Columbia

Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina, but Raleigh is the capital. The same goes for Chicago in Illinois, where the capital is Springfield, but not for Ohio where Columbus is both the capital and the largest city. Columbia is the capital of South Carolina and also its largest city, closely followed by Charleston.
6. Which of these cities used be known as "Madras"?

Answer: Chennai

All these cities are located in the Indian sub-continental region. Chittagong is the principal port city in Bangladesh, Colombo was formerly the political capital of Sri Lanka-- this is now Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, and Chandrapur a city in the mineral-rich region of Maharashtra state in India. Chennai was formerly called "Madras" which gave its name to a patterned cotton cloth and a type of curry.
7. What city was home to a major conference in 1864 that would lead to the creation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867?

Answer: Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The conference at Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island in 1864 included delegates from the British colonies of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I., and "Canada" which at that time meant Québec and Ontario. Newfoundland was invited too late for delegates to attend.

The discussions about mercantile and then political union led to a further conference at Québec and eventually to Confederation on 1 July 1867.
8. In which country will you NOT find a city called Córdoba?

Answer: Panama

The first major city called Cordoba is in the Andalusia region of Spain, taking its name from the Carthaginian term "kart-juba" ("fortress of Juba"). In 1573 the Spanish settlers to Argentina built another Cordoba in the centre of their new country, and it's now called the "second city" of Argentina.

In 1618 the Spanish settlers in Mexico built another and smaller Cordoba in the Vera Cruz province of Mexico.
9. Which of these European cities takes its name from a city in North Africa?

Answer: Cartagena, Spain

Cartagena takes its name from the Punic (Phoenician) colony of Carthago Nova ("New Carthage") in Spain. It was founded by Carthaginian settlers in 227 BC. Carthage was the great enemy of Rome in the 3rd century BC, with whom she fought three major wars known as the Punic Wars.

After the Roman victory, Cartagena became a Roman city and capital of one of the Spanish provinces. Another major Cartagena was founded in 1533 on the Caribbean coast of Colombia.
10. Which of these cities does NOT take its name from a historical person?

Answer: Colombo, Sri Lanka

Carson City, the capital of Nevada, was founded in 1858 and named after Christopher (Kit) Carson, the American scout and trailblazer. Cincinnati takes its name from a hero of the Roman Republic, Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a major political figure at Rome during the 5th century BC and famed for his moral integrity. Corpus Christi is Latin for "The body of Christ", the words used at the distribution of the bread at Mass. Colombo has nothing to do with Christopher Columbus, but comes from "kolamba" a local word for "harbour" or "port".
