Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the coastal town on Highway 1 famous as home to author Henry Miller, the 60's-inspired Esalen, and dramatic forest and shore scenery?

Answer: Big Sur

When you travel through Big Sur, it appears as if almost no one lives there. You may need a guide book to find the side roads that lead to the beaches. The areas is said to be home to aging Beatniks.
2. Continuing north on California Highway 1, we encounter a State Reserve dubbed the "greatest meeting of land and sea on earth" and which was a favorite of photographers Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. What is this place named?

Answer: Point Lobos

Lobos is Spanish for "wolves." The barking of the sea lions was mistaken for wolf cries by early explorers who were apparently unfamiliar with either. Enter the reserve and park in first lot, where you will be sure that someone has misled you about such a dull place. A short walk down the trail reveals the wondrous scenery.
3. Next stop off California Highway 1 is the upscale coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea where the owner of the Hog's Breath Inn became frustrated with local building ordnances and successfully ran for mayor. Who was he?

Answer: Clint Eastwood

Resident Eastwood was mayor from 1986 to 1988. Carmel is a candidate for the world's most beautiful tourist town. Supported by affluent locals, at last count it featured 57 "fine dining" establishments as well as numerous art galleries, fancy shops, and small inns. An aptly described "cottage" in the town runs upwards of a million dollars. But it is a great place to visit.
4. Near Carmel, north along California Highway 1 is the town of Pacific Grove, whose city motto names a certain type of creature and which is a great place to see them. What creatures are these?

Answer: Butterflies

Orange and black monarch butterflies summer far north and return to central California in spectacular flocks in the fall to winter over. You would think that such a small creature would have figured out a place to live that did not involve flying so far.
5. Silicon Valley entrepreneur David Packard helped daughters Nancy and Julie pursue a special interest by writing a check for $32 million. What was built in Monterey, California, using the gift?

Answer: The Monterey Bay Aquarium

It is good to have a helpful dad. The Monterey Bay Aquarium has been spectacularly successful. It showcases the local marine life, including squid, jellyfish, sea otters, kelp forest fish, and deep water fish. Monterey is also an excellent place to dine on squid, although that actually doesn't bring as many visitors as the aquarium.
6. Next stop north on Highway 1 is Castroville, home to a festival devoted to a vegetable that grows with attractive silvery green foliage and blue-purple flowers. They still sell postcards of Marilyn Monroe as the 1948 queen of the festival, suitably immersed in a bin of what?

Answer: Artichokes

Castroville is self-proclaimed artichoke capital of the world. The street lights in the small town are shaped like artichokes. Ms. Monroe managed to tolerate the rather prickly vegetable quite well.
7. We continue north on California Highway 1 through Santa Cruz, and then to less traveled portion of the coast. A stop at Ano Nuevo brings with it some small danger to visitors who disobey the posted cautions at certain times of the year. What is the danger?

Answer: Attack from bull elephant seals

A standing human is about the same height as a male elephant seal, and may be mistaken as a rival during breeding season in January. A male elephant seal may reach 16 feet in length and weigh two tons. They can move surprisingly quickly for their size.
8. About 40 miles north of Ano Nuevo we go through Half Moon Bay to the small town of Princeton, location of Mavericks. From time-to-time in the winter the call goes out and people rush from all over the world to go to Mavericks to do what?

Answer: Surf large waves

A shelf off the coast breaks surf of forty feet or more when distant winter storms in the North Pacific originate the waves. The high surf and rocky shore make it dangerous even for experts, but these are regarded by many as the biggest waves in the world.
9. Just before Highway 1 merges into San Francisco, we travel through the town of Pacifica, where the San Andreas fault heads out to sea. The Pacifica summer festival is built around a contest to call what?

Answer: Fog.

The famous San Francisco fog is characteristic of the whole coast, so calls for the fog to come in are likely to be answered. The fog is a summertime effect that cools the coast. Summer high temperatures may be in the 50's F on the coast while they are over 100 F only 50 miles inland.
10. Finally, we cross the Golden Gate bridge and Highway 1 is notched into high cliffs along the winding shore. Eventually, the road turns inland and ends at Leggett, home of the Chandelier Tree. What is special about the Chandelier Tree?

Answer: Cars can drive through a hole in the tree trunk

It's a redwood with a rectangular hole six feet wide and six feet eight inches high at ground level. The tallest redwood in California is also the tallest tree in the world, but it is not here at this privately owned attraction.
