Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the names of the three islands of which the Cayman Islands are made up?

Answer: Grand Cayman, Little Cayman & Cayman Brac

Little Cayman and Cayman Brac are known as the "sister islands" to Grand Cayman. Tortuga was the Spanish name for Grand Cayman (made famous in Pirates of the Caribbean), and Tortola is one of the British Virgin Islands.
2. Of which country are the Cayman Islands an Overseas Territory?

Answer: UK

Although the Caymans are a British dependent territory, they have strong links with the USA. In addition, Spanish is spoken almost as much as English due to the islands' proximity to the Spanish Caribbean.
3. What is the national flower of the Cayman Islands?

Answer: Banana Orchid

We also have banana spiders, but they're less pretty.
4. For which beach is Grand Cayman famous?

Answer: Seven Mile Beach

Seven Mile Beach is now only six miles long, due to Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Rum Point is a beach on the North Side, close to Stingray City, Smith Cove is a dive point near George Town, and Barker's Beach is on North West Point where horses frequently trek.
5. What was the name of the hurricane which devastated Grand Cayman in September 2004?

Answer: Ivan

Fortunately, no-one was killed in Ivan, although three people died in its aftermath. Katrina was the hurricane which hit New Orleans in 2005. Ernesto and Alberto were low-force hurricanes which missed Cayman in 2006. The most commonly asked question of ex-pats to this day is "Were you here for Ivan?" ...
6. "Haven" was a 2006 film about the Cayman Islands, made by a Caymanian director and shot (mainly) in West Bay on Grand Cayman. Who was the famous British lead actor?

Answer: Orlando Bloom

Haven had a mixed reaction in Cayman, as it has been perceived to be a very inaccurate view of the Cayman Islands. Frank E. Flowers was the director.
7. Business class on Cayman Airways flights is known as which of the following?

Answer: Sir Turtle Club

Sir Turtle is also the symbol shown on all Cayman Airways stationary, aeroplane tails and tickets (except e-tickets).
8. The Cayman Islands is entirely tax-free.

Answer: True

Although we pay duties on certain items in the Cayman Islands, no taxes are levied (apparently there is a difference. It makes none when you pay it though!)
9. No work permit is required for a person of any nationality to work in the Cayman Islands.

Answer: False

Immigration laws in the Cayman Islands are actually very strict. Although the Immigration Law 2003 is currently being reviewed, as at January 2007, ex-patriot workers could stay for a maximum of seven years unless exempted. Work permits must be reviewed at least every two years, and certain jobs are restricted to Caymanian workers.
10. Anyone can open a bank account in the Cayman Islands.

Answer: False

Due to strict anti-money laundering legislation, a person must be resident in the Cayman Islands to open a bank account. In addition, sources of funds are strictly monitored and proof of provenance is required for large sums. Sorry to shatter your illusions folks!
