Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Name the Scandinavian country, famous for its fjords, where you'll find Lake Mjosa and the River Tana.

Answer: Norway

The River Tana (or Tanaelva) is the fifth longest river in Norway, with a total length of approximately 350 km. Lake Mjosa is the biggest lake in Norway. However, the North European country most famous for its bodies of water is Finland (the "Land of 1000 Lakes").
2. Which Asian country has Lake Sambhar as its largest inland salt-water lake? The River Godavari also flows through it.

Answer: India

Lake Sambhar is actually a salt lake (the largest inland salt lake in the country). It is found in Rajasthan, India. The River Godavari runs through both Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
3. What Central European country has Lake Chiemsee and the River Elbe as two of its main bodies of water?

Answer: Germany

The River Elbe rises in the mountains at the borders of Poland and the Czech Republic but mostly flows through Germany, emptying into the North Sea. Lake Chiemsee is a freshwater lake located in Bavaria, Germany.
4. Pick the South American country where Lake Ypoa and River Pilcomayo are located.

Answer: Paraguay

Paraguay does not have many well-known lakes. Ypoa is the largest one and is situated about 65 km to the south of Asuncion, the capital of the country. The Pilcomayo River is about 2500 km in length.
5. Which African country is home to Lake Opeta and the River Zoka? This country is more famous for another great lake that is found there - the largest lake in Africa.

Answer: Uganda

Uganda is more famous for Lake Victoria, the largest lake in the African continent. Opeta is a smaller lake and is actually an extension of the larger lake Kyoga, located in the center of the country. The River Zoka is a tributary of the Albert Nile.
6. Name the 'downunder' country where the interconnected bodies of water, Lake Alexandrina and the Murray River, are found.

Answer: Australia

Murray River is the longest river in Australia. Its waters actually flow through Lake Alexandrina.
7. Which former Yugoslav republic houses Lake Bled and the Sava River?

Answer: Slovenia

The Sava River flows through four countries, all former Yugoslav republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. Lake Bled lies in the northwestern part of Slovenia.
8. Lake San Martin and the Colorado River both lie in which South American country?

Answer: Argentina

The Colorado River is a tributary of the Bermejo River and runs mostly through the cloud forests of the Salta region. Lake San Martin is also known by the name "O'Higgins".
9. Choose the Baltic country that has Lake Lubans and the Daugava River.

Answer: Latvia

Lake Lubans is the largest lake in Latvia. The Daugava River also runs through Belarus, Russia, Lithuania, and Estonia.
10. Identify the Asian country where the Tonle Sap Lake and Tonle Sap River exist in a unique, combined system.

Answer: Cambodia

The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest in southeast Asia and forms a combined "lake-river" system with the Tonle Sap River. The flow of the river is reversed during the winter period, bringing water from the Mekong River into the lake, increasing its area and depth.
