Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the largest lake in the world?

Answer: Caspian Sea

The Caspian sea is actually considered a lake, not a sea, despite its name, because it is not linked to any ocean. It is called a sea because the Romans called it 'mare Caspium' (or salty lake).
2. What is the largest lake in South America?

Answer: Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca has an area of 3,200 sq. miles. Lake Maracaibo has a total surface area of 5,217 sq. miles, but is not technically a lake. Rather, it is a bay.
3. What is generally considered to be the longest river in the world?

Answer: Nile River

The Amazon is the longest river in South America, Mississippi in North America, and Yangtze in Asia. The Nile is the longest in Africa and the world.
4. In what ocean can Iceland be found?

Answer: Atlantic Ocean

It is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, and it's not so icy as the name might lead you to believe!
5. What country contains the Ural, Yenisei, and Lena rivers?

Answer: Russia

All 3 can be found entirely in Russia, but in the Asian portion. The longest river in the European portion of Russia is the Volga (also the longest river in Europe!)
6. Into what body of water does the Rio Grande (between the U.S. and Mexico) flow?

Answer: Gulf of Mexico

The Rio Grande covers the entire bottom portion of Texas and defines its border with Mexico. It extends all the way to the Gulf of Mexico!
7. What do Lake Powell, Lake Mead, and Lake Nasser all have in common?

Answer: All are man-made lakes

The three lakes mentioned were created by dams. Powell is in southern Utah, with a bottom tip stretching into Arizona. Lake Mead is in Nevada. Lake Nassar is in Egypt and is named for Gamal Nasser who was president when the lake was built.
8. What is the highest waterfall in the world?

Answer: Angel Falls

Angel falls is located in Venezuela, and is 3,281 feet (1,000 m) tall.
9. What is the largest lake completely within the boundaries of the United States?

Answer: Lake Michigan

Both Lake Erie and Lake Superior are partially in Canada. The Great Salt Lake is in Utah, but is smaller than Lake Michigan, which is surrounded by Michigan and Wisconsin. I love flying over that lake at night, you can see the outlines of Chicago and Milwaukee quite vividly on a clear day!
10. What ocean contains the deepest trench on Earth?

Answer: Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean's deepest point is at the Marianas trench, 36,198 feet (11,033 m). It is so deep, Mt. Everest could be placed within it and still have 6,000 feet to spare! If you enjoyed this quiz you might want to try my quizzes on islands, isthmi and/or straits of the world...good luck!
