Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The mainland of Denmark is situated on a peninsula, which is called Jutland in English. What do the Danes themselves call it?

Answer: Jylland

Jutland is surrounded by the North Sea to the west and the Baltic Sea to the east, with straits called the Skagerrak and Kattegat to the north and north-east. This area was the site of the only major sea battle in the first World War, called the Battle of Jutland. The battle took place on 31 May 1916, between the British Grand Fleet and German High Seas Fleet, with both sides suferring severe losses. The outcome was inconclusive, and both sides claimed victory.

Sjælland is the Danish name for Zealand, the largest of the Danish islands. Eljinge is an uninhabited island and Jegindø is another island.
2. The city of Silkeborg is situated on which of these rivers, the longest in Denmark?

Answer: Gudenå

The river Gudenå runs through central Jutland and is around 160 km (99 miles long), although varying sources give lengths between 145 km and 176 km. Silkeborg itself holds an annual Jazz festival each June, but its best attraction is the 'Ildfestregatta'. This translates as the 'fire party regatta' and was originally established in 1899. This is held every three years, the most recent at the time of writing this quiz having been in 2008. The event includes firework displays, live music, laser shows and amusements.

The Odense river is on Funen (Fyn) and is only 60 km in length, and the Vida forms part of the southern border, with Germany. The river Skjern is the largest Danish river by volume, and flows into the North Sea.
3. Odense was the birthplace of which of these well known Danes?

Answer: Hans Christian Andersen

Odense is situated on Funen (Fyn in Danish), which is the third largest island in Denmark. It is named after Odin, the Norse god of war. Apart from attractions linked to Andersen, which include a museum, his childhood home and a park complete with a statue of the writer, Odense also has St. Canute's Cathedral to offer. The cathedral dates back to the 11th century on this site, and was rebuilt from the 13th century in Gothic style. The crypt displays the skeletons of St. Canute (Knud in Danish) and his brother, Benedict.

Brigitte Nielsen, probably best remembered for her marriage to Sylvester Stallone, was born in Rødovre. Victor Borge, who established himself in the USA in the 1940s and was a wonderfully talented pianist and comedian, was born in Copenhagen. Vitus Bering was an explorer, particularly of the regions around Alaska, and came from Horsens. His name was given to several areas around Alaska, including a Strait and Sea.
4. Denmark has a land border with Germany, but is also joined to Sweden by the Øresund Bridge. At which Swedish city does it terminate?

Answer: Malmö

Construction of the bridge commenced in 1995, finished in 1999 with the official opening on 1 July 2000. It connects Copenhagen to Malmö and carries a four lane road and two railway tracks. Tolls are charged for its use and the costs of building are expected to be recovered by 2035. Ownership is jointly held between Denmark and Sweden.

Malmö, Gothenburg and Helsinborg are all situated in the south west corner of Sweden, with Stockholm (the capital) being on the eastern side of the country.
5. Billund is the head office of which Danish company?

Answer: Lego

Billund is dominated by the Lego factory, where they make those little plastic bricks which hurt so much when trodden on with bare feet. The company was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen, who was a carpenter making wooden toys in the 1930s. He expanded into using plastic in 1940. The company name comes from 'leg godt', which means 'play well' in Danish. Billund is also the site of the first 'Legoland', which opened in 1968, and features attractions built from Lego bricks. Other 'Legolands' have been opened in England, California and Germany, with others planned for Malaysia, Dubai and Florida.

Calsberg's head office is in Copenhagen and Bang and Olufsen's in Struer. Velux is situated in Hørsholm, north of Copenhagen.
6. One of the major attractions in Copenhagen is the Tivoli Gardens. The original name when they opened included another name, based on an area of London. What was it?

Answer: Vauxhall

The gardens were opened in 1843 and were the brainchild of Georg Carstensen. The original name was the Tivoli and Vauxhall, after pleasure gardens in Paris and London. The gardens were originally situated outside the city, which has expanded over the years to surround them. Attractions include a lake, musical events, a roller coaster and other rides, and an aquarium.

It is Denmark's most popular tourist attraction, and is believed to have inspired Walt Disney to build Disneyland.
7. The island of Møn is well known for its cliffs, which are made from which substance?

Answer: Chalk

The island is connected by bridges to Zealand and Falster, and the cliffs on its eastern side are one of its major attractions. They are known as the Møn Klint - the White Cliffs of Møn - and are around 130 metres high (about 450 feet). In a flat country like Denmark, this is exceptional. There are steps down to the beach - about 500 of them. Apart from the chalk cliffs, Møn is also known for its burial chambers, with one at Grønsalen being dated back to 3500 BC, and its churches.
8. Which of these attractions could you NOT visit while in Denmark?

Answer: Manneken Pis

The Little Mermaid is probably the best known of Denmark's many attractions. It is situated in Copenhagen harbour, and is based on one of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales. The Amalienborg Palace is the home of the Danish Royal family in the winter months. The Caritas Fountain, also known as the Fountain of the Golden Apples, is the oldest fountain in Copenhagen. It was originally a gift from King Christian IV, who reigned from 1588 - 1648 and has been rebuilt and renovated several times since. On special occasions, golden balls are placed in the fountain, which gives it its alternative name.

The Manneken Pis is a well known sculpture on a fountain in Brussels, Belgium.
9. The Viking Ship Museum is situated in which Danish city, also known for its annual music festival?

Answer: Roskilde

Roskilde is situated on the island of Zealand, and dates back to Viking times. It has a cathedral, which dates back to 1170 and which is the burial site for Danish monarchs. The Viking Ship Museum was established in 1969 and was built to house five Viking ships which had been excavated from the fjord. The ships had been scuttled in the 11th century to block the fjord and help repel seaborne attacks. The museum now has more than thirty boats on display. The Roskilde Festival is one of the biggest in Europe, and was first held in 1971.

The other options are also places in Denmark, with Helsingør being better known in English as Elsinore, where Shakespeare's play 'Hamlet' is set.
10. Because it is such a flat country, Denmark is classed as one of the 'Low Countries'. True or false?

Answer: False

Historically, the 'Low Countries' are Belgium, Netherlands (Holland) and Luxembourg, with the name of the area in Dutch being De Nederlanden. Denmark is also very flat, with its highest natural point most commonly being given as Møllehøj in the central part of Jutland.

The height of this point is just under 171 metres (561 feet). Other candidates are given as Yding Skorhøj and Ejer Bavnehøj, which are of similar height. The average height above sea level is only 31 metres (101 feet).
