Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2005 how many provinces did the Dominican Republic have?

Answer: 30

The Dominican Republic has 30 provinces and 1 district (Distrito Nacional or as said in English: National District), which is where the capital Santo Domingo is located.
2. What are the two rivers that divide the city of Santo Domingo into several parts?

Answer: Ozama and Isabela rivers

Despite the fact that the Haina river is in the Province of Santo Domingo it is not located inside the city. As its name indicates, it's located in Haina, which is a small township just west of the city of Santo Domingo. The Chavon river is located in La Romana, and the Yaque del Sur is located on the western part of the country.
3. Which of these following cities is located farther to the east?

Answer: San Cristobal

San Cristobal is also the southernmost of the mentioned cities.

Answer: Puerto Plata

This city, which lies in the northernmost part of the Dominican Republic, is famous for its Victorian style restored houses.
5. This river is the longest in the Hispaniola island.

Answer: Artibonito

Trick question! The Yaque del Norte is the longest river in the Dominican Republic, but the Artibonito is the longest in the island, shared by the D.R. and Haiti.
6. Besides sharing Hispaniola with Haiti, there are several smaller islands that belong to the Dominican Republic. The largest are:

Answer: Saona, Catalina, Beata and Cabritos

Answer: La Pelona

All of these mountains belong to the Dominican Republic. "La Pelona" is 3,097 m high, second only to Pico Duarte (3,175 m). La Rusilla is Third, with 3,038 m. Nalga de Maco is far behind, reaching only about 2,000 m, and Isabel de Torres, despite being the highest Mountain in Puerto Plata, is fairly small (no more than 800 m).
8. Which of the following has never been the formal name of the capital city?

Answer: Santo Domingo de las Americas

Funny! Isn't it? The formal name of the city of Santo Domingo was Santo Domingo de Guzmán, but is now just Santo Domingo. When the city was founded on the left side of the Ozama River in 1496, it was baptized as Nueva Isabela, in honor of the Queen of Spain. Five years later, the city was rebuilt on the right side of the river, after being devastated by a hurricane.

The name was then changed to: 'La Nueva Isabela, Santo Domingo del Puerto de la Isla de la Española.' During the mid 20th century, dictator Trujillo changed the name of the City to Ciudad Trujullo, a name that lasted until his death.
9. Santo Domingo is home to the first Catholic Cathedral in America. What is its proper name?

Answer: Our Lady of the Incarnation
