Answer: Baseball

US Marines occupied the Dominican Republic from 1916-1924. Dominican-born Sammy Sosa has made baseball his career.
Nevertheless, as it has been pointed out to me, the professional league of the Dominican Republic actually began in 1890 with two professional teams. When the Licey was founded in 1907 (nine years before the first American Intervention in 1916) there were soon no rivals for them, therefore the other teams disappeared. With the American Occupation came passion for the game. 'El Escogido' was founded in 1921 during the Intervention, just to play against the Licey.
Thank you to Coquito for this additional information.
8. What is the nickname for the Dominican mountain range 'Cordillera Central'?

The Dominican Republic has three mountain ranges but the Cordillera Central is the highest. The Cordillera includes the 'Pico Duarte' which is 3,175 metres high and is the highest peak in the Caribbean.
