Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Leicestershire village sits right next to East Midlands Airport and is famous for being home to a race track?

Answer: Castle Donington

Castle Donington sits on the western edge of East Midlands Airport and is home to Donington Park, famed for hosting the Formula One European Grand Prix in 1992. Donington Park also is home to the worlds largest collection of Grand Prix cars. The stately home, Donington Hall, is also located on the edge of the village and is home to the airline British Midland (bmi).
2. In 2006, which Northamptonshire town claimed to be the largest in Europe without a railway station?

Answer: Corby

While Corby claimed this dubious title, so have many other places. Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland has a population of 115,000 and is without a railway station.

Corby lost this claim to fame when Corby Railway Station opened in 2009.
3. Which East Midlands city is the largest and contains the National Space Centre?

Answer: Leicester

It is estimated that Leicester has a population of just over 285,000, comparing favourably with its nearest competitor for the title, Nottingham with a population of 275,000. However the Nottingham urban area is larger than that of Leicester. The National Space Centre was completed in 2001 and cost £52 million, the Beagle 2 Mars mission was controlled from here.
4. In 2005 which Derbyshire town was named by the newspaper, " The Independent" Cracktown UK because of its excessive use of the drug?

Answer: Ilkeston

Although part of Derbyshire, Ilkeston is considered part of 'Nottinghamshire Metropolitan Area' as it lies only two miles away from the edge of the city. Its most famous son is the actor Robert Lindsay who stars in the BBC comedy "My Family", his family background was explored in an episode of the BBC series "Who Do You Think You Are?"
5. Which Nottinghamshire town was the late eighties/early nineties BBC children's comedy "Maid Marian and her Merry Men" set in?

Answer: Worksop

The programme depicted the town of little more than several mud huts and was actually filmed in Somerset, England. The show itself was based around the legend of Robin Hood. However it changed the character of Maid Marian into the group's leader and Robin as a fool. The Major Oak, where legend places base of Robin Hood, is located near the town.
6. Staying on the legend of Robin Hood, according to legend Little John was buried in which Derbyshire village?

Answer: Hathersage

A modern gravestone has been erected where, according to the legend, Little John is buried. He was supposedly born in nearby Loxley. Hathersage itself is located in the Peak District and is actually nearer Sheffield, in South Yorkshire than to Derby.
7. William Ewart Gladstone, one time British Prime Minister was first elected to Parliament in 1832. Which Nottinghamshire town did he represent?

Answer: Newark-on-Trent

Gladstone was born in Liverpool. He represented Newark-on-Trent (or Newark as it is commonly called) until 1845. He later became Chancellor of the Exchequer and Prime Minister and represented other constituencies.
8. Which town is the county town of England's smallest traditional county, Rutland?

Answer: Oakham

Oakham is also the largest town in the county, home to 10,000 people. Uppingham is the second largest town in the county while Stamford is actually just over the border in Lincolnshire. The county of Rutland was given county status in 1888, however it was abolished in 1974 and became part of Leicestershire.

However, in 1997 the county council was restored. It is also the smallest council area in the UK by area apart from the City of London (the traditional centre known as the square mile not London in its entirety). Rutland is dominated by Rutland Water, the largest reservoir by surface area in England.

It still shares some services such as the local police force with Leicestershire.
9. The East Coast Main Line (railway) passes through Lincoln.

Answer: False

The East Coast Main Line does pass through Lincolnshire but passes some way to the west of Lincoln and passes through the town of Grantham.
10. Where is Greyfriars Bus Station?

Answer: Northampton

Unlike other traditional county towns in the East Midlands (Derby, Leicester, Lincoln and Nottingham) Northampton does not have city status and therefore is the UK's third largest town (after Reading and Milton Keynes).
