Derby and the surrounding countryside has had a long association with the wool industry, and the ram is the emblem of the city, as well as the local football team. A ram appears on the city's official coat of arms.
2. Royal Crown Derby has been manufacturing which product in the city since the mid 18th century?

Answer: Porcelain

Royal Crown Derby are makers of bone china ornaments and tableware. The company began life as Derby Porcelain, became Crown Derby in 1773, with the Royal moniker being added in 1890. The firm's Osmaston Road factory includes a visitor centre, with factory tours included.
3. If you were driving your car out of Derby on "Brian Clough Way", which city would you be heading towards?

Answer: Nottingham

"Brian Clough Way" is part of the A 52 between Derby and Nottingham, and was given this name in 2005 to honour the legendary soccer manager of that name. Clough led Derby County to the championship of England in 1972. After falling out with the club's chairman he left County shortly afterward, and would go on to achieve even greater success with their fierce local rivals, Nottingham Forest.

Answer: Derwent

The Derwent flows for around 50 miles in a generally southward direction from Bleaklow in the Peak District to Derwent Mouth, where it flows into the River Trent. Its fast flowing waters provided the power for the silk mills which saw Derby rise into a major city during the Industrial Revolution of the 18th century.

Ye Olde Dolphin Inne is located on Queen Street in Derby city centre. The Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA) include it in their National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.

Answer: Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee

Despite having a cathedral, Derby was technically a town rather than a city until the late 20th century. In 1977, Queen Elizabeth II, as part of her Silver jubilee celebrations, conferred city status on Derby, the only one of nine hopeful towns to be chosen.
7. Which famous motor manufacturer opened a car and aircraft manufacturing plant in Derby in 1907?

Answer: Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce manufactured luxury cars in Derby since the early 20th century, and made Merlin engines for aircraft used in both world wars. After the war, they diversified into making various aeronautical and marine products, as well as luxury cars, with plants in both the UK and abroad, but still have a huge presence in Derby.
8. Derbyshire County Cricket Club play most of their home games at the county Ground in Derby. Which one of the following cricketers NEVER played for Derbyshire?

Derbyshire CCC are one of the less successful team in first class English cricket - their only county championship title of the 20th century came in 1936. Dominic Cork was a Derbyshire all-rounder who played test cricket for England, mostly in the late 1990s; Geoff Miller represented Derbyshire and England in the 1970s and 80s; and Peter Kirsten was a South African test player who played for Derbyshire from 1978 until 1982. Viv Richards, the legendary West Indian batsman, played all of his English county cricket with Somerset and Glamorgan.
9. What is the name of Derby's indoor shopping centre?

Answer: Derbion

Opened in 1975, Derbion was the largest indoor shopping centre in the East Midlands in 2023. As well as a capacity for up to 200 shops, the centre includes a bowling alley, a cinema and "Paradise Island", an adventure golf site.
10. What is the name of the stadium where Derby County F.C. played home games starting in 1997?

Answer: Pride Park

Derby County are a soccer team who were twice champions of England in the 1970s. They played home games at the Baseball Ground for many decades before moving into the brand new Pride Park in 1997.
