1. What is the name of the capital and largest city of the Greek island of Crete?

Answer: Heraklion

Crete is the largest island in Greece, and the fifth largest in the entire Mediterranean Sea. Heraklion is located on the north coast of the island near the ancient ruins of Knossos. As well as a tourist centre, Heraklion is an important port with ferry services to both the Greek mainland and other islands in the area.
2. Located in the south western state of Baden-Wurttemberg, which city is home to Germany's oldest university?

Answer: Heidelberg

Heidelberg is located on the banks of the Neckar River, and is a centre for scientific research. Heidelberg University was founded in 1386, making it the oldest in Germany, and one of the oldest in Europe.
3. Which European city was the northernmost in the entire world to play host to the Summer Olympics during the 20th century?

Answer: Helsinki

Helsinki is the capital city of Finland, and is situated on the Gulf of Finland, an arm of the Baltic Sea. Helsinki was originally chosen to host the 1940 Summer Olympics, but these were cancelled due to the outbreak of World War 2. The games eventually arrived in the city in 1952, with the host nation finishing a creditable eighth on the medal table.

Answer: Hainaut

Hainaut is one of the ten provinces that make up Belgium. Located in Wallonia on the border with France, its capital is Charleroi, whilst its largest city is Mons. Hesse is a state of Germany, Halland is a county of Sweden and Haskovo is a province of Bulgaria.

Hamburg is the third-largest port in Europe, after Rotterdam and Antwerp. The city is also a major tourist destination, with numerous museums, music venues and theatres. The city gives its name to the hamburger, although the site of its actual invention is open to debate.

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey. Most of it is located in Europe, but a few suburbs are located across the Bosphorus in Asia. The Hagia Sophia had had a colourful history, being opened as a Christian cathedral in the sixth century, before the Ottomans converted it into a mosque in the 15th century. It then became a museum in 1935 before reverting to a mosque in 2020.

Answer: Istria

The majority of Istria is in Croatia, with small portions in Italy and Slovenia.
It is bounded by the Gulf of Trieste in the north and the Kvarner Gulf in the south and east. Pula is the largest city in the region, and is home to a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre.
8. Which city, one of the largest in Romania, was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia for nearly 300 years between the 16th and 19th centuries?

Answer: Iasi

Iasi is located in north eastern Romania close to the border with Moldova. As well as being capital of the former Principality of Moldavia, the city was briefly capital of Romania between 1916-18. The city's Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was founded in 1860, making it the oldest in Romania.

Answer: Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt has a history dating back some 1200 years and is a former capital of the Duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt. In the years following the end of World War 2, car manufacture became the leading industry in the city, with Auto Union moving there after their former headquarters in Chemnitz and Zwickau were both severely damaged by allied bombing.

This company eventually became the modern-day Audi company.
10. Which European city hosted the Winter Olympics in both 1964 and 1976?

Answer: Innsbruck

Innsbruck is the fifth-largest city in Austria and the capital of Tyrol province. It is situated in the far west of the country in the Karwendel Alps. A major centre for winter sports, particularly skiing, Innsbruck was chosen to host the Winter Olympics of 1964, when the host nation finished second in the medal table.

In 1976, USA city Denver was meant to be the host, but they withdrew after Colorado taxpayers declined to finance the games. With the infrastructure from 12 years earlier still largely in place, Innsbruck was given the games for a second time.
