Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which French city, on the Loire River, is synonymous with Joan of Arc?

Answer: Orleans

Orleans is located in north-central France in the Centre-Val de Loire Region, and is one of the bigger cities on the banks of France's longest river, the Loire. In 1428-29, the city was under siege from the forces of England, but held out after the prophetic arrival of peasant girl Joan of Arc - she was subsequently given the nickname "Maid of Orleans".
2. Which town on the Tyrrhenian Sea is located next to the identically-named ruins of Ancient Rome's former seaport?

Answer: Ostia

The ancient town of Ostia was located at the mouth of the Tiber River and served as the seaport for Ancient Rome. The harbour eventually silted up, and the town was abandoned in the 9th century AD. Much of its ruins have been excavated, and are noted for their mosaics. The modern town of Ostia was founded nearby in the 19th century, and is essentially a seaside suburb of modern Rome.
3. Which one of these rivers forms a major portion of the border between Germany and Poland?

Answer: Oder

The Oder River (also known locally as the Odra) rises in eastern Czechia, and flows in a generally northern direction for 522 miles in to the Baltic Sea. 116 miles of its length forms the border between Germany and Poland. Cities along its banks include Ostrava (Czechia), Frankfurt an der Oder (Germany) and Wroclaw (Poland).
4. All of these cities were once part of the Soviet Union, but which one of them is located in the modern-day nation of Ukraine?

Answer: Odessa

Omsk is in Russia, Orhei is in Moldova and Orsha is in Belarus. Odessa is located on Ukraine's Black Sea coast, north west of the Crimean peninsula. Nicknamed "The Pearl of the Black Sea", the city is a major seaport and tourist destination. In 1905, it was the site of a famous mutiny on the battleship Potemkin, which led to the murder of hundreds of local citizens on the Potemkin Stairs.
5. Which Spanish city is the capital of the province of Asturias?

Answer: Oviedo

Oviedo lies in northern Spain, around 15 miles inland from the Bay of Biscay. The city was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias until it became part of the Kingdom of Leon in 924, and is the administrative centre of the modern autonomous community of the same name. The city has numerous ancient buildings dating from the 8th and 9th centuries.
