Quintana Roo is a mid-sized state with a capital city based in Chetumal.

The downtown area of Cancun is known as "El Centro," and is actually a very beautiful design. The supermanzana superblocks form giant trapezoids that have large central open areas framed by u-shaped residential streets. The downtown area is quite walker- and cyclist-friendly. El medio is the Spanish word for middle. Ciudad is Spanish for city and Mercado is the Spanish word for market.

FC Atlante won a league title in the stadium in the 2007 inaugural stadium year.

Chichen Itza was an important focal point of the Mayan civilization starting in the 8th century AD.

It is believed that the city was one of the largest and most sacred cities of Mayan culture. Today it remains a living historical monument to Mayan architecture and daily life.

The Mayan ruins of El Rey literally translates as "The King." The ruins are thought to be dated from the 10th century and the site was used until the beginning of the 16th century. The ruins include plazas enclosed by the ruins of buildings along with a variety of above-ground platforms connected by a long pathway. The El Rey ruins are located at the southern end of Cancun. The name for the ruins is thought to be derived from the fact a skeleton, believed to be an ancient Mayan king, was discovered there during an archaeological dig.

The Torre Escenica is an attraction located within the Cancun hotel district. The tower rises some 363 feet (110m) and affords spectacular panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea and the Cancun area.

Located in the busy hotel district, Parroquia de Cristo Resucitado offers a welcome respite from commercialism and sand. The building is beautifully constructed with an eco-friendly feel. One of the many reasons to visit include the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe and the beautiful image of Christ over the altar. The building is airy and patrons can enjoy the fresh ocean breeze while attending mass.

El Parque de las Palapas is one of the first major parks to be built in Cancun. The park hosted the first city square and saw the very first inauguration of Cancun's first municipal President. The park hosts a number of cultural events including the Caribbean Arts Festival. For a short while in its history, the park became a dangerous place frequented by drug dealers and gang members. In recent years it has experienced a rebirth and once more draws families and visitors to experience live music, fine food, and family-oriented recreation activities.

Parque Urbano Kabah is a little piece of jungle heaven tucked away in the heart of Cancun's downtown area. Visitors to the park can walk the long jungle trail through the park and see a wide assortment of wildlife and tropical birds. There is also a playground and small museum in the park. My favorite companions when jogging the mosquito-friendly trail are the chattering spider monkeys.
