The Dutch captured the city from the Portuguese and colonized it from 1641-1795 and 1818-1825. It was part of the Straits Settlements along with Singapore from 1826-1942 and 1945-1946 after WWII.

Shah Alam is the capital and Klang is the royal capital of the Sultan. Port Klang is the largest sea-port in Malaysia. Another major city is Petailing Jaya.
