One theory goes that according to legend, during a deer hunt, a deer fell off a cliff and died, and in German Reh-fall means 'deer fall'. But the more sensible meaning of it is that Reval stems from an old Estonian county called Revalia. In any event the name was changed in 1918 when the country won it independence.
