This is the former name of Djakarta, capital of Indonesia.

Answer: Dutch New Guinea

Hollandia, later Djajapura, was capital of Dutch New Guinea. The town is now called Jayapura. Dutch New Guinea is now called West Irian or Irian Jaya, and is a part of Indonesia.
16. Kupang.

Answer: Dutch Timor

Dutch Timor is now called West Timor and is part of Indonesia.
17. Dili.

Answer: Portuguese Timor

Now called East Timor. Occupied by Indonesia 1976. To be independent May 2002.

Answer: Australian Trust Territory of New Guinea

This is a kinky one. Rabaul was capital of German New Guinea, also called Kaiser-Wilhelm Land. In 1920 it was to be the Australian Trust Territory of New Guinea. Rabaul was also capital of the Trust Territory, but only up to 1937 when the capital was moved to Lae after a volcanic eruption destroyed Rabaul. Port Moresby became capital 1941, and still is the capital of independent state of Papua New Guinea.
19. Saigon.

Answer: Cochin China

Later the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon was also the capital of French colony Cochin China (also known as Cochinchina).
20. Hanoi.

Answer: French Indochina

Hanoi, however, was the capital of French Indochina.
21. Douala, 1901-16.

Answer: German Cameroon

Tricky, since Douala was also the capital of French Cameroon 1940-46. But the dates will not lead you astray. Capital of today is Yaounde.
22. Lome, 1884-1914.

Answer: Togoland

Lome was capital of German colony Togoland, now called Togo. After German defeat 1914 Togoland was divided in a French part called Togo or French Togo, and a British part called Togo or Trans-Volta Togoland. The British part was to be included in Gold Coast, later Ghana.The French part is now the independent republic of Togo. Now to the incorrect answers. Lome was never a part of Trans Volta Togoland. Dahomey is the former name of Benin. And Gold Coast is of course the former name of Ghana.
23. Windhoek.

Answer: German South-West Africa

Today called Namibia.
24. Dar es Salaam

Answer: German East Africa

Later called Tanganyika, now, together with Zanzibar, Tanzania.
25. Tsingtao.

Answer: Kiaochow

Kiaochow with capital Tsingtao was the major German colony in China. The city is now called Qingdao.
