Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, but a city named Jupiter is more modest, with a 2011 population of 55,000. In which peninsular state would you find it?

Answer: Florida

The Jupiter in question is in Florida, near Palm Beach. The city got its name by mistake. It was called Hobe (an American Indian name); early Spanish mapmakers translated it as Jobe. Another mapmaker misinterpreted the Spanish spelling Jobe and wrote it as "Jove".

But wait, there's more! English speaking mapmakers thought Jove was meant to be Latin for Jupiter, named it that and the name stuck.
2. Neptune was the Roman god of the sea. This town of Neptune is nowhere near the sea but it is about 100 miles (160 km) from Lake Erie. What state is it in?

Answer: Ohio

Neptune is a very small hamlet in Mercer County, Ohio. As shown in a YouTube video, you can drive through town in 58 seconds.
3. Many of the town names in this quiz don't have any direct connection with heavenly objects, but this one does! Named for the aurora borealis (the northern lights) in which state (sometimes called the "flour sack") will you find this town named Aurora?

Answer: Minnesota

Aurora, Minnesota bills itself as the "Star of the North". Founded in 1903, civic leaders were so enamored of the display of northern lights, they named the city Aurora. The "Northern Lights Music Festival" is held there each July. And isn't Minnesota shaped like a flour sack? Say yes.
4. Venus is a bright spot in the night sky. If you're looking for the town of Venus, naturally you'll find it in "The Natural State". Which southern state is that, exactly?

Answer: Arkansas

Venus is a small township in Madison County, Arkansas. The population is "all rural", according to the City-Data website (2012).
5. Ceres is the only dwarf planet in our inner solar system, but there are more listings for Ceres in the U.S. than any other celestial body in this quiz, except Venus. The Ceres in this question is a hamlet in which "Empire State"?

Answer: New York

Ceres is in Allegany County in New York, the "Empire State". It's in the western part of the state on the Pennsylvania border.
6. You hear people say that the earth is a small place; it's not if you're on foot. In what big state will you find Earth?

Answer: Texas

Earth, Texas was established in 1924 as the town of Fairlawn. Learning that there was already a Texas town by that name, a contest was held and Earth was chosen as next-best name. Since there are 1,215 cities in Texas, it's understandable that back then it might have taken a while to see if a name was already being used.
7. The constellation Orion is on the celestial equator and can be seen all over the world. If you wanted to see the town of Orion, you'd have to go to which Midwestern U.S. State?

Answer: Illinois

Orion is located in northwest Illinois, near the Iowa border. The town's website has a tab which gives tidbits about Orion's history. For instance, in 1968 the town spent $1,256.82 to repair the band shell in the town park. You probably wouldn't find information like this about Los Angeles, Berlin or Adelaide on their websites.
8. "Take me to your leader," said the man from Mars. But in which of these states will you find Mars?

Answer: Pennsylvania

Mars, Pennsylvania is in the western part of the state. It has a roadside attraction called the "Mars Spaceship". It's disconcerting to be in Pennsylvania and ask someone where they're from and be told with a straight face: "Mars".
9. Pluto is the Rodney Dangerfield of our solar system - it doesn't get any respect. It's a planet, then it's not, it may tell us something of the origins of the universe, then it won't. But getting down to Earth, in which state that was formed because of the American Civil War will you find Pluto?

Answer: West Virginia

West Virginia was formed in 1863 when it broke away from the Confederate state of Virginia and sided with the Union. Pluto is in an unincorporated area in the southern part of the state. It has a very small population but it does have a post office.
10. Mercury is the planet nearest to the sun and the fastest moving, a real quicksilver object. Quickly now, in which of these silvery states will you find the town of Mercury?

Answer: Nevada

Nevada, the "Silver State", is home to the town of Mercury. It was purposely built by the Atomic Energy Commission to house personnel of the Nevada Test Site.
