This Is the End, Beautiful Friend Quiz

The title of this quiz was taken from a Doors song but it's not about the Doors. It's about some famous couples, some who spent much of their lives together and some who split up by choice or tragedy. Can you guess who these ten couples were?

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was an actor whose most noted roles were those of a hard-boiled cynic. She was new to Hollywood and met him while acting in her first film. Their eventual marriage became a Hollywood legend. Hmm, is there some little thing in that photo that might give you a clue? Here's looking at you, kid!

Answer: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall

Did you notice the 'Sierra Madre' printed on the side of the parade float? "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" was one of Humphrey Bogart's most acclaimed films. The correct answer was he and Lauren Bacall.

As they prepared for the movie "To Have and Have Not" (1944), Humphrey Bogart tried to ease Lauren Bacall's first-movie jitters by telling her he had looked at her screen test and "We'll have a lot of fun together"; and so they did. Married in 1945, they became Hollywood legend by staying together. It was alluded to in the Bertie Higgins song "Key Largo"; "We had it all, just like Bogie and Bacall". He died of cancer in 1957. He had wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea but that was illegal at the time. As noted in the book "Bogart", "instead of a casket at his memorial service, there was a model of his 54-foot yawl, the 'Santana', the only rival Bacall ever had."
2. They were crazily in love with each other but it wasn't enough. After 17 years they divorced, surprising most of the 40-million Americans who had watched their weekly television show during its 6-year run. While he might have wanted her to 'splain' she might have just said "Waaaaah"! Who was the couple?

Answer: Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz

Did you get the connection between the photo and the "chocolate factory" episode of "I Love Lucy" starring Lucille Ball. She and her real life husband, Desi Arnaz, starred in the series from 1951 to 1957. She had worked her way from Vaudeville to television, marrying Desi along the way.

He was a band leader from Cuba and toured with his band while she worked in radio. When the chance came for her to try television she insisted he be part of the cast. Desi had great financial sense and they made a very good living before they divorced in 1960.

They had started their own production company, Desilu Productions; she bought out his interest after the divorce. In 1966 she took a chance on a television show proposed by a Los Angeles, California police officer. You have probably heard of it: "Star Trek".
3. The man in this relationship played the premier position for the premier baseball team - center fielder for the New York Yankees. The woman was an actor who was known worldwide, more for her looks than her acting ability. Their marriage seemed an odd mixture and didn't last. Who were they?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe

Though all the men listed played center field for the Yankees, the only couples married to each other in the question were Johnny Damon and Michelle Mangan (she is not an actor) and Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe, which was the correct answer.

Known as "Joltin' Joe" or "The Yankee Clipper", Joe DiMaggio played his entire 13-year major league career with the New York Yankees. Marilyn Monroe was an actress in some high-profile films and was considered the sex goddess of the 1950s. Although their marriage seemed a mixture of personalities, DiMaggio was linked before and after with famous women. His 1954 marriage to Monroe lasted less than one year. In 1961, he obtained her release from a psychiatric hospital and it was rumored he had proposed marriage to her again. He died in 1999 of lung cancer. With great fame came great pressures and Monroe died a tragic figure in 1962, of an apparent overdose of barbiturates. As the Kinks sang about her in the song "Celluloid Heroes": "She should have been made of iron or steel, but she was only made of flesh and blood".
4. Two young people who wanted to be in show business met and first performed together in 1926, going from vaudeville to movies to radio to television and getting married along the way; a marriage which lasted for 38 years. She was the addle-headed woman and he was the straight man. He later got to play the role of a really important guy. Who were they?

Answer: George Burns and Gracie Allen

George Burns and Gracie Allen worked their way up the Vaudeville ladder in the late 1920s and were then picked up as a comedy team for movies by Paramount Pictures. They had radio programs; their first success in radio was with the BBC in London. Their television fame started in 1950 and continued through 1958. Gracie became ill with heart disease and died in 1964. George continued on alone, playing in several well-regarded movies, including two in which he played God. He died in 1996 at age 100.
5. "Who is (that man)?" she asked Elvis Presley. "He's a friend of mine," said Elvis. "He's gonna be a big star". The man did become a star and married the woman who asked about him. Who was that couple who were considered country music royalty? The photo shows the title of their biggest hit song together.

Answer: Johnny Cash and June Carter

Johnny Cash was one of the first rockabilly singers; June Carter was a daughter of the legendary Carter family country musicians. Each had a previous marriage before they got together. Though he was the bigger star her name gave her credibility in music circles. They recorded the song "Jackson" which was a hit record for them. Johnny struggled with drugs for many years but she wasn't intimidated by his stardom or self-destructive impulses and was his only steadying influence. They went on to be married for 35 years before she died in May, 2003 and he in September of that year.
6. There was a famous couple that was never officially a couple. Their relationship was an open secret for decades, yet they never married. Who were they?

Answer: Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy met on the set of "Woman of the Year" (1941). They were attracted to each other and soon began a clandestine affair (though many people knew about it) which lasted until his death in 1967. Tracy was a Roman Catholic and since his wife Louise would not ask for a divorce, he would not go against the precepts of his religion.

He moved out of his house to a bungalow to be near Hepburn. They made nine films together, the last being "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" in 1967. Tracy died of a heart attack less than three weeks after the film was finished shooting. One of Hepburn's last films was "On Golden Pond" with Henry Fonda in 1981, for which they won Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively. Did you put her name together with the photo clue?
7. They were two people with roots in New England who were making names for themselves in Hollywood. But even being a steely man and never smoking weren't enough. Who was this couple who came to sad endings?

Answer: Christopher Reeve and Dana Morosini

Christopher Reeve was born in New York City; he was a descendent of John Winthrop, the second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His most famous role was one of his first: Superman (1978). He eventually starred in four Superman movies and several other movies and television programs. Horseback riding in 1995, he was thrown and suffered a cervical spinal injury, becoming a quadriplegic as a result. He lobbied on behalf of people with spinal cord injuries until his death of cardiac arrest in 2004.

Dana Morosini Reeve was born in New Jersey, grew up in upstate New York and graduated summa cum laude from Middlebury (Vermont) College. She had guest roles on "Law & Order", "All My Children" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". She was also a singer and talk show host. She married Christopher Reeve in Massachusetts in 1992. In 2005, she announced that although she had never smoked cigarettes, she had lung cancer. She died in 2006.
8. Two young actors met on the set of "Days of Thunder" in 1989. They impulsively got married but it didn't last. Who was the couple, one of whom was in a movie about a Parisian cabaret?

Answer: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman admits she wasn't really ready to be married. But after ten years of marriage it was Tom Cruise who filed for divorce. They have two adopted children. He has been married three times, she twice. They both have long, successful film careers; the photo clue for this question represents her role as Satine in "Moulin Rouge", a 2001 film.
9. They met on a movie set and got married, then got divorced. Wait a moment, they got married again. Oh, then they got divorced again. Who was this couple who couldn't seem to make up their minds?

Answer: Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton met on the set of "Cleopatra" in 1963. She played the title role, he played Mark Antony. Besides being a film for which both were remembered it was also the most expensive movie made up to that point: 40-million U.S. dollars.

They began an affair so intense that the Vatican weighed in, calling it "erotic vagrancy". They were wed in 1964, and divorced in 1974. Thinking they made a mistake, they rewed in 1975 but were divorced again in 1976. Both did some of their best film work after they got married (the first time). Both were married several times over their lifetimes.

They made 12 films together, perhaps "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" receiving the most critical acclaim. He died in 1984, she in 2011.
10. Sometimes it really clicks. A Hollywood couple married for 50 years? Wow! Maybe it helped that they made their home in Connecticut, away from Tinseltown. They met around 1953 while she was understudying for "Picnic" on the New York stage, in which he featured. After being cast together in a 1957 movie they decided to cast the rest of their lives together. Who was this couple?

Answer: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward

Of the four couples in the question, only one pair didn't end up divorced. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward knew each other before acting in "The Long, Hot Summer" in 1957 when they fell in love. Both were Academy Award winners. They appeared in eleven films together. He was the more prolific actor; among his many movies was "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" about an American frontier judge in Del Rio, Texas, where the photo for this question was taken. The Newmans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008; he died later that year.

Besides their acting careers they had diverse interests. Woodward worked behind the scenes of local Connecticut theatre. She decided to pursue a college degree and graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1990 at age 60.

Newman became interested in auto racing and set several Sports Car Club of America speed records, some of which stood for many years after he retired. He turned his love of cooking into a line of food products, "Newman's Own", with all profits going to charity. Always a heartthrob, he kept his good looks throughout his lifetime. In 2004, at age 79, he came to my then home-state of New Hampshire to do some campaigning for a presidential candidate; women tripped all over each other to get near him! Once asked by someone from "Playboy" magazine to explain his and Joanne's longevity, Newman replied as earthily as might be expected for that magazine: "I have steak at home. Why go out for hamburger?"
