Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Aya remembers that the country he wants to write about borders a particularly large country. This neighbor is the largest landlocked country in the world. What is this neighbor country?

Answer: Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world by area. It borders quite a few other countries, including Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, and Turkmenistan. Interestingly, it borders two of the top three largest countries in the world (by area)!
2. Aya knows that the country he's forgetting touches a particularly large lake, so large it's called a sea. In fact, five countries, including Kazakhstan and Russia, border this lake. What is the name of this lake?

Answer: Caspian Sea

The Caspian Sea is the biggest lake in the world in terms of area. Interestingly, this lake is saltwater, not freshwater. The five countries it touches are: Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Russia, Azerbaijan, and Iran. The Caspian Sea is one of the few lakes that stick out on a map.
3. Aya recalls another territory that borders his forgotten country. This border country lies along the Persian Gulf and is the second-largest Middle Eastern country. Which one?

Answer: Iran

Iran is the 18th-largest country in the world by area. Saudi Arabia is the largest country in the Middle East. Libya is not considered part of the Middle East, although it is the 17th-largest country in the world by area, just barely bigger than Iran. Afghanistan is too small to be the second-biggest--it's 41st on the list of all countries by area.
4. As Aya tries to remember what country this quiz was about, he recalls that it has a bordering country on the northeast. This neighbor also borders Kazakhstan and the Aral Sea, which (like the Caspian Sea) is a saltwater lake. Which country?

Answer: Uzbekistan

On the eastern side of Uzbekistan's border with Kazakhstan lies the Aral Sea. This lake is rapidly declining in volume. The reason for this is because the former Soviet government used water flowing into the lake for irrigation purposes. This is also the reason the lake is very salty.
5. The country Aya's forgotten about is a former member of the Soviet Union. Many of us know that Russia is the largest former country of the Soviet Union in terms of area, and some know that Kazakhstan is the second-biggest. Which one is the third-biggest by area?

Answer: Ukraine

Ukraine is the largest all-European country by area, the fourth-largest country by area with any land in Europe (after Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey), and the third-largest by area of the former members of the Soviet Union. Ukraine is the 44th-largest country in the world.
6. Aya's forgotten country is an unofficial member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, or CIS, which is made up of former Soviet Union members. Most former Soviet countries joined. Which of these did not?

Answer: Latvia

Georgia is no longer a member of the CIS, but was at one time. There are nine countries in the CIS, excluding Georgia. Those official countries are: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Ukraine is a participating non-member.
7. Aya recalls that by 2009 only two countries had ever had their native as the Executive Secretary of the CIS. One of them is, of course, Russia. What is the other country?

Answer: Belarus

In the 20th century, four out of six times a man from Russia was the Executive Secretary of the CIS. However, Ivan Korotchenya was the Executive Secretary twice, from 1991-1998, and part of the year 1999. He was, of course, from Belarus.
8. Aya's forgotten country has another bordering country whose capital is Kabul. Its currency is the same as the first seven letters of its name. What is this country?

Answer: Afghanistan

The currency of Pakistan is rupee, the currency for Tajikistan is somoni, and the currency for Kyrgyzstan is som (also called 'sum' or soum'). That leaves only Afghanistan, whose currency is afghani.
9. Aya's forgotten country has a lot of borders. However, one of these four pairs of borders does not touch each other. Which two?

Answer: Kazakhstan and Afghanistan

A number of countries block Kazakhstan and Afghanistan from touching each other. Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan all block the two from touching.
10. Aya finally remembers what country this quiz was going to be on! It is dominated by the Karakum Desert and its capital is Ashgabat. Which country?

Answer: Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is the 53rd-largest country in the world. It's located in the Middle East, and borders the Caspian Sea, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan. Some facts you may not know are that Turkmenistan is the fourth-largest former Soviet country, and the southern-most country in CIS.

Aya thanks you for helping him remember all the answers for his quiz... now he's off to write it! ;)
